I think they're significant. You can mod any game's graphics which is great and lots of games support further modding.
New games have been born from mods and many games have been fixed by them.

I didn't have a good grasp on how technology worked during 2008 and such. When i heard about the xbox 360s red ring of death. I wondered why would they create that, and why don't they just remove the red ring of death to stop it from happening.
and when i started playing pc games I thought you could just rip a model of a gun from bf3 or something and put it in something like garry's mod and the game would render it how it exactly how it looked in Battlefield 3
of course i know much more than i did over half a decade ago
