RAM loses its memory as soon as power is lost, so they had to include a battery to power it that lasts about 20 years. That complicated setup was far cheaper than flash memory at the time.

Sometime around the turn of the millenium, I had saved up money to go out and buy myself a game. However, the only console I had available was my big brother's SNES, and by that time they basically had phased out most games from the stores.
Went to some rental shop where you could outright buy the games, and I got myself ALTTP. I think the other options were Mario Kart, Sreet Fighter II (I think it was vanilla) and some alien-y game I can't remember.
I was happy enough to have a new game to play, but the case that they gave to me was basically a blue VHS box that the cartridge would just rattle around in. The "boxart" was just printed and stretched picture of the original SNES box.
Now get this, despite being in PAL territory(Finland)they were selling NTSC cartridges around my area as opposed to PAL ones. My big brother was forced to buy an universal adaptor to play any of his games that were not Mario All-Stars, and it took me years to realize what was the deal with different looking cartridges. Particularly when my brother had a NTSC DKC1 while my friend had a PAL one.

I honestly go out of my way to find gored copies of games as long as I can get them at a fraction of the price.
I don't really get the issue some people have with replacing the front or label on a cartridge. It's not the original board or anything, it's common plastic and something anyone can print in their house as long as they have a decent printer and sticker paper. As long as it's well done I'd call it more of a restoration than tampering with the cartridge, and a relabeled game doesn't have any less value than one that looks disgusting.
