Why do so many controllers use a criss cross button??
>>
Now that the dust has settled, can we all agree that the dualshock is perfect, and the standard for all controllers?
>>
>>338175073
no
>>
>>338175073

>>

>>
>>338175073
Absolutely
>>
imagine liking the gamecube controller. the buttons feel cheap as fuck
>>
>>338174718
its simple and memorable
same as colours, letters and shape.
PS got it right because shapes and colours are universal where letters are not.
>>
>>338174718

Because "ABC" and "XYZ" are the most recognizable strings of the alphabet.

For the playstation, specifically, O and X are synonymous for yes and no in Japan (and a pentagon button to continue the shapes pattern would be strange as well).
>>
>>338174718
>criss cross
>>
To make you jump, jump.
>>
>>338175385
That's part of the charm. If you think they were crap you should see the ones they made for the wii u. They're even cheaper.
>>
>>338175441
But they're not universal on controllers. X has a very different position on da than anywhere else.
>>
>>338175073
Definitely
>>
>>338175441

>shapes are universal where letters are not.

I didn't realize that letters weren't composed of line segments.

The fact that a Japanese company used the latin alphabet proves you're full of shit.

Sorta like triangle being used a lot for backing out in ps1 and ps2 days

>even though all the original letter-based controller designs were done by the Japanese, one of the few major languages which doesn't use the Latin alphabet

Really?

It irritates me to this day that Nintendo controllers have A to the right.

>>
>>338177020
Bind X/A/bottom button to right grip

Which you should be doing anyway, there's a reason modern action games don't put the dodge/roll/sprint on a face command anymore and it's because the player shouldn't HAVE to do a doofus claw-grip maneuver to execute such a timing-critical command by giving up camera control

This thing just feels too awkward in the hand compared to other controllers.

I love the idea of it, but the overall design sucks.
>>
>>338177063
Cool story here :

The placement of circle and cross were meant to mirror A and B on the SFC Controller. When brought over to the US, the American side of Sony wanted so badly to differentiate themselves from Nintendo that they mandated the switch for every hame they could, so that the button where B was would be select, and the one where A was would be cancel.

Now they just look like idiots.
>>
>>338175073
Of the three I've used, they feel like they're made for tiny asian toddler hands.
>>
>>338177519

>>
>>338177535
Once you get used to its ergonomics you can never go back to sticks, though.

I played TfD with it for like 2 months and later went back to Bayo and kept trying to jump by clicking the left stick. It's irritating as fuck not being able to jump with the same finger you use to move but you never realize it until you get into the SC.

Dualshock 4 is a downgrade in my book. You have to grip it with your whole hand which sucks, and muh concave/vex hybrid analog sticks slip out from under my thumbs way worse than the old controller's sticks ever did

OP: learn the difference between a cross shape and the letter X for minimal plebbage

>>

The stick is shit, it was a late addition for worthless scrubs who couldn't move with the left pad like they were supposed to.

The left stick still makes a passable D-pad though. Not as good as the original 4-button design but still not terrible
>>

No, it has been the same since the SNES, baring the Cube and N64 which had very clearly different shapes to their buttons.

Literally the greatest buyer's remorse in all my gaming life.

This controller is a piece of trash. Valve made it to be able to work like a mouse, as a result it's not the best device to play EITHER controller games or keyboard and mouse games.
>>
>>338178105
Nintendo was always a secondary system to me and while Dualshock has it's own buttons, Xbox controller has the same ABXY but backwards. I've played SMW2 recently and there's an optional QTE sequence. I lost every time.

>>

It's necessary for 2D games

>>
Why has controller innovation stagnated /v/? No one is willing to deviate from the dual shock/xbox design

>it works for all the games

Those games are designed for those controllers, no shit they work.
>>
>>338178427
>It's necessary for 2D games
I wouldn't call it necessary at all. I play pretty much all 2d games with a joystick these days. Feels just as good as a d-pad ever did.
>>
>>338178361
They're treated like 4 more buttons, outside of fighting games.
dpad existence is dependant solely on fighting games, otherwise it would have been turned into actual buttons by now, also it takes less space.
>>
>>338178563
Because when Nintendo does it, everyone is shitting on it.
>>
>>338175073
1-3? No. 4? It's passable. I like the tocuh pad more than a thought i would even if all games just use it as a big select button.

My perfect controller:

>Gamecube joysticks

>SNES d-pad
>360 ergonomics, bumpers and triggers
>>
>>338175073
Yes.

Xbox controller switching the analog and D-Pad is stupid.
>>
>>338178563
Xbox one has trigger rumble and ps4 has the touchpad, sensor and the useless speaker from the wii, third party controllers have buttons in the back of the controller
I don't see what more you could add to something that doesn't need that much change, better off just using m and keyboard if you want more buttons, k and m haven't evolved much either and those work flawlessly still

Now select weapons, fire both primary and secondary fire, and use afterburner, all without having to move your hand.

Also you left out roll.
>>
>>338178275
Once you get used to gyro fine aiming, left-pad move+jump and get settled into a set of bindings you like, it's better than KB/M for most PC games.

The only games I don't prefer it to KB/M for are games like Civ that play like fancy spreadsheets or MMOs with eleventy-billion commands.

It actually seems FAIRLY intuitive; using controller pitch to elevate isn't perfect but it isn't terrible either. Using controller roll (not yaw, you can toggle it) to roll seems extremely intuitive as long as you don't expect it to be 1:1 mapped and use it as a roll-rate throttle

Beyond "shoot gun" and "shoot missiles" I don't remember what else you could DO in Descent though

Okay, so what I said before, plus
L2 missiles
L1 + stick select missiles
R2 gun
R2 + stick select gun
Left grip mines
Right grip afterburner

Depending on how many gun/missiles there are you might just use left stick for gun switches and the 4 face buttons for missile switches.
