Multiplayer open beta was beyond shitty so that left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth. Every single promotional footage was of people intentionally playing slow as fuck to be "cinematic" because that's what marketing is these days so that also got people wondering if that wasn't just how the game would play after all. And then no review copies were ever sent to the big name review websites so people thought Bethesda was cowering because they knew their game wasn't that good.

The singleplayer was developed by id and the multiplayer by a different studio entirely. They sped up the singleplayer after criticism of being too slow but we endured the shitty slow multiplayer beta.
The game turned out to have a great, fast singleplayer that feels like a true Doom 3 instead of the real one. The game opens with "rip and tear" and Doomguy is a dimension-traveling force of nature that is bound to slaughter demons everywhere he goes and is basically as feared by demons as much as humans fear Satan. It's pretty good.

If everything is technically canon now, my theory places Doom 3 as chronologically the last story involving this Doomguy. Since he's jumping through various realities, he couldve jumped into the prehistoric era of the Doom 3 universe, and and met the Ancient Martians. When they accidentally let Hell loose, he obviously steps up and becomes thier Champion, eventually and use the newly created Soulcube in a final gigantic onslaught against Hell. He is killed, but the Soulcube remains and Hell is defeated until that timeline's UAC discovers the Ancient ruins on Mars. But Doom 3's playable character is just that; just a guy who happened to kick ass.
