Relative to other video games where death is extremely rare, Dark Souls etc is indeed hard. It was also considered quite punishing because you would lose your souls if you couldn't recollect them and you had to travel back to the boss through all the enemies again.

The hardest thing about these games is figuring out how to play them properly, like managing your stamina bar, optimizing your moveset, learning to pick the right weapons and shields, getting the hang of I-frames and subconsciously understanding how the levels are designed etc. Its a lot of commitment required from the average player, though more "serious" players get the hang of it much faster.
Thats why Souls games only seem to get easier as you progress in the series. Demons Souls is probably piss easy in comparison to DaS3 now, even though you feel its the opposite.
Its obviously not "hardcore shmup" hard, but yes it is very above-average hard in a way.

I stay behind him and deal with the managable, but dangerous moves he uses when you do that. I think I actually actively dislike the tailswipe the most, but it makes sense and it won't actually necessarily kill you, especially since he waddles around like fat asshole, and will also butt slam. Never mind the "wind up long enough for you to chug".

I was speaking of the master ninja difficulty. It changes the enemies to be almost entirely composed of exploding shuriken ninjas, on top of them getting a lot more health. Even when its not them, every other enemy has a ranged attack too, and given the terrible camera, means shit is just flying offscreen into you constantly. Its really just an example of garbage difficulty since they never run out of ranged attacks and do them any time they want, so a lot of it is just RNG hoping they don't do it at the wrong time.
