Well many games of this sort (FPS, lots of hero-type characters, MOBA elements in BB's case) have been free-to-play in recent years; people expected Overwatch to be F2P at first release, and for a while it was unclear if Battleborn was multiplayer, singleplayer/co-op, a moba, or what. (Although it's neat that it is all of those things).
It isn't so much the similarities in the case anyways, as it is the fact that they're competing for people's money in the same fashion.
