I'd advice you try out Rome 1, and Medieval 2.
That being said, you don't really NEED any background experience to pick up Total Warhammer (I'm still enraged they fucking missed that naming opportunity).
There's no continuity to this game and a lot of the mechanics in the older games have changed or been updated, so it may be best to just go in blind, I'd say.

OG Rome is still the best.
It has the best atmosphere, music, and everything else. Only problem is the sometimes braindead AI, but that's not a thing they managed to improve at all. Med II is also fun, Shogun 2 is pretty good, and Atilla is also good. Rome II is unoptimized hot garbage that still refuses to run properly, and Empire is hit or miss.

For years Chaos in 40K was hyped up THE galaxy ending threat while the Necrons and Tyranids were just sideshows. But Tyranid and Necron fans are retards who cannot read the writing on the pages.

Every total war game comes with an option to change the unit size so an army of 120 soldiers might have only 40~60 showing up on the screen if you lower that setting.
That also changes gameplay slightly, lines will be thinner so cavalry can break through it more easily and they'll be able to go up ladders and siege towers more quickly.

I think you are underestimate the popularity of the Vampire Counts. They are basically the only somewhat evil/darker faction that can actually build an empire which I'm sure attracts a lot.
Empire is guaranteed to be most played at launch every poll and thread I've seen has indicated this. A majority will always try the more vanilla faction first to get into the game.
It is the same reason everyone plays Rome first in Rome Total War.
Dwarfs are popular because of all their benefits and just being dwarfs in general but they don't eclipse the VC popularity.
It may be due to LL, both the Dwarven LL are slightly less popular whereas Mannfred is the second most popular LL after Karl Franz.

I'm sure it is uploaded/scanned online SOMEWHERE but I have no idea where. There is a book literally just called "Sigvald" by Darius Hinks that is 408 pages. I've got a copy on my nightstand next to me.
The book, and his ruleset in the older codexes are all that are really available about the guy. The best picture of him people always post is the one used/made for the cover of the book. Then there is the slightly older one from the codexes where he is standing on a pile of bodies and finally just that TW screenshot.
Guy isn't terribly fleshed out honestly, but most of Warhammer fantasy wasn't except for very specific shit GW felt like writing about again and again (i.e. Gotrex and Felix, now there is a lot more skaven and dwarven slayer development in the lore.) because it sold well.
