When they did that trailer a while back that had that scene from the picture in it, I pointed out the characters being off center looked weird, made some of the following characters end up off screen while walking around in the demo, and that Earthbound was centered on the center of the characters. Huge fan of all three games, looks pretty good so far but I'll obviously have to play it to see how it compares to the real deal. The art and music are very impressive to me considering it's a fan work. My greatest fear is for the gameplay and writing, they have said no memes were allowed and media they have shown references to (columbo and the thing) were nice and subtle so I have some hope. I don't care when it releases, just let finish it and not put out a garbage product.

The art looks good from what I have seen, the music sounds good from what I have heard, what little of the writing we've seen doesn't seem bad, and they are making a deliberate effort to not include any ebin me mes, which to me is a good sign.
Basically, the big question is how consistent the quality of everything it when and if they ever get to releasing this, and how well they pull off the gameplay itself.
There is a shitload of potential in this project, and I would like to see this ragtag group of random assholes on the internet pull it off.

For me I see it as you're still putting forth the same amount of effort you would be on your own project; you just had someone else provide a foundation of ideas.
That foundation is an easy way to draw people in and notice the kind of quality that you can provide.
Plus it of course fills a void that you as a fan could never have filled officially.
Some people simply aren't as creative as others, but can still be skilled.
Like fan art (in your own style being preferable, except for works made to look official) is perfectly fine, you're practicing drawing, seeing more art of characters you like, and you already have a nice aesthetic design to work with.
Of course with that being said, I would love for more people to flex their creativity; simultaneously though, I would also like to have plenty of fan provided content for series I adore.
If the person is happy with doing fan works and the fan work is of good quality, then I see no problem with it.
