Bethesda used HP Lovercraft references and actually copied the plot of some of his stories in Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim and Fallout 4.
>>338111148

>>338110825
Why?
I kinda hope they copy Lovecraft actually. I want them to do the scene where they bash Cthulhu in the face with a boat and for everyone to cry about how there's no way that'd stop him
>>338110910
>>338110413
At least they actually try and differentiate themselves from everyone else doing it.

>>338122991
You mean fallout 3? Another shitty game?
>>338125745
King in Yellow was weird, it starts out really great and mysterious and then gets more and more subdued towards the end where it's just a story about young french people in love, as far as i understood.
I know it's a collection of stories but they all shared something ominous, except for the last and longest story which just felt really out of place.
>>338110413
BB doesn't just have the occasional reference or cuhrazy tentacle monster. Lovecraft influences form a fundemental part of the game's design and story. Cosmic horrors beyond human comprehension push the events of the game even if you don't immediately pick up on it. I wish more games had something similar to the insight mechanic, that was clever af. It's really like peering through the lens of a madman. The NPCs are all under their influence.

>>338130440
He did it so he could conscript niggers into the war. He was even going to send them back to Africa after the civil war but some ASSMUNCH LIBERAL ARTS ACTOR HIPSTER FAGGOT shot him.
I also dislike this condemnation of racism in society these days. It's trying to push a delusion and because it's not reality the only outcome will be frustration, which will further destroy racial relations. Different races are not equal to each other and some are lesser than others, but that doesn't mean you have to be malicious towards them for it nor does it mean you have to give them special benefits.
The same is happening with trying to push mental illnesses as "normal" in society. The point is to create a state of frustration and confusion for easier manipulation. The current state of capitalism thrives off confusion the same way an energy system thrives off fuel.

Most of the Cthulhu mythos stories dance around actually describing Cthulhu. The horror isn't derived from the ZOMG OCTOPUSMAN element so much as the whole "this is beyond my mortal comprehension" aspect. The geometry of Cthulhu's lair, the mysterious trinkets uncovered by researchers, the suspicious and untimely deaths of people involved with Cthulhu, etc. Best way to fail at being "Lovecraft" is to think transplanting some mutant octopus shit into your whatever is compelling.

I really dislike the whole, "scientists developed this after the war in hiding" angle to circumnavigate the whole point of the game's intented aesthetic. Bethesda should have made their own post apocalypse franchise instead of shoving shit like this into Fallout. But who cares anymore. The butchering of the first two game's premise has hit so hard it creates a complete dissonance between the games that slowly worked away any believability if Bethesda attempts at lore for me.

It actually looks pretty fun. Bethesda does better when they aren't failing horribly at trying to make an RPG and just make a le wacky side adventure. Point Lookout and The Pitt were both more interesting than Fo3's main game. I'm better Far Harbor will be better than Fo4.
Of course it won't have an ounce of the delicious goodness that was Dead Money and Honest Hearts (the other two were okay).

It's mindless fun, like a Farcry game. It's actually good for what it is, the problem is that it isn't fucking Fallout.
When I play a Fallout game I want fleshed out factions, interesting settlements, actual quests with multiple ways to go about it, stats that are relevant to dialog, skill checks, stat checks, more than four dialog options, freedom to roleplay (hence the "R" in "RPG"), and a sensical, relevant map.
Fallout 4 has none of that. What it does have is surprisingly good gunplay, decent visuals for what it is, some cool designs, and lots of looting. It's more of an FPS with RPG elements. It's like Bioshock. It's nothing like Fallout.
You see, if this game were "Le Wacky Bethseda Apocalypse Game 2" (with Fallout 3 having been LWBAG 1), then I'd really like it. The problem is that I want more Fallout. I want a followup to New Vegas, but Howard and Hines' punk asses will never let them touch it again because they're so salty that they got out played.

Yes you don't need to insult my basic knowledge in the franchise that hard. Big MT as a concept wsd just taking the FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY from science fiction to it' up most extreme. Not a bad concept on it's own but writers never consider the implications of lore breaking with this shit. Fallout had "rules" that tied the whole premise together so it made some kind of sense. And as they keep expanding the limits of the world to get around those rules they dilute the identity of the franchise.
Under the current rules with the multiple super science secret base areas they could forward the time line a bit and hsve everyone using actual futuristic technology instead of what would be confused futuristic to people in the 50's, and get away with making a modern dcifi game under the Fallout name with it not technically breaking the lore anymore, because the original premise is only excrdisddd when it's convenient.

I mean, I get they're going for the "ruined world" aesthetic where everything is all shambles and broken and rusty, but that kind of falls flat when previous games in the same series have factions building entirely new cities out of new materials and shit. 100 years prior.
This would all be solved if they set it very recently after the bombs like fallout 1, but nope.

The only game that I wish I owned a PS4 for is Bloodborne.
I seriously get jealous that Sonybabs can have such a great new IP that does Lovecraft justice while still being awesome in terms of gameplay, story and atmosphere.Dark Souls 3 is a middling venture compared to BB, even though it is still a great game unto itself. It just relies too much on DaS1's nostalgia and the piss-poor PvP to really elevate it to 10/10 status like the original game or Bloodborne.
>>338132516

>>338132605
Why do people instantly bring that up. So far I've found like four weapons and a ring that affect poise...which isn't in the game. That's sloppy as fuck. DS1 had poise, I expect it to fucking work in 3.
If I'm in big, heavy armor, I shouldn't get staggered by a rat brushing my leg. It's a non-functioning piece of the game that needs to be turned on. A literal mistake, or unfinished bit. But it gets defended because "M-MUH PVP".
So not only does it render all the poise-boosting equipment and weapon arts useless, but it basically makes raising equip load pointless. So then you have useless arts, useless gear, and a useless stat. Great game.

Exactly. The horror of Lovecraft's entities doesn't come from them being weird squiggly squid monsters.
The horror of his works is that the universe is completely alien and doesn't care about human existence at all. We've existed for less than a blink of a cosmic horror's eye and we are just a tiny spec of dust floating in a vast, cold universe.
tl;dr: The horror is existential despair and hopeless insignificance.

Well, to be fair, the reason Tolkien is revered as such a great fantasy author is that he wasn't trying to write fantasy. LOTR, The Silmarilion, and all the other shit he wrote to go with it are basically a linguistic/theological project that he spent is life working on. He essentially designed an artificial mythology for a civilization that lacked its own (Britain, who's mythology all came from invading Vikings and later French).
He was like "what would this region's ancient stories be?" Then he set about doing the real linguistics work to figure it out. It was a massive labor of love. He wasn't going "huehue I'm gonna make a le epic medieval fantasy with orc sluts", he was actually trying to do something. That's why what he did was superior to "fantasy authors". Because he wasn't a fantasy author. He was a linguist doing linguistic work.

Britain's mythology was all inherited from the various civilizations that occupied it. Lot of it came from Scandinavia, a ton came from France. Maybe I'm misremembering things, but I thought that it wasn't that Tolkein felt that Britain "lacked" its own so much as that the modern Western world had lost its connection to its mythology. Tolkein was a scholar of the ancient civilizations in the British isles, and he intentionally used aspects of their stories in his works to make them into what he felt were more applicable to people in the modern day.
So it's not so much "never had" as "lost." Later in his life/career Jack Kirby would describe his "Fourth World" comic books the same way.

Humans know being trapped in a house with a masked ax-murderer probably isn't very fun, but movies portraying it are easily called horror titles. Horror doesn't have to be unfamiliar and plenty of people exist and believe in a much more cheerful(?) view of life where their god watches over them and will punish the bad and save the good.
>>338134549
>le edgy I'm not scared of being insignificant guy
With modern medicine, space travel, etc. there's the attitude that we have conquered nature. Humans have also always been egotistical. If Lovecraft was so mediocre then I doubt he would have birthed an entire genre that apparently speaks to some people.

Except those who seriously belive in a higher power who will punish the sinners also entertain the possibility they'll be along the punished. Fearing God is part of the religion.

>>338134818
>With modern medicine, space travel, etc. there's the attitude that we have conquered nature
Perhaps this is more of a modern mindset because of arrogance. But humans since time memorize haven't feared being insignificant.
What is there to fear about being insignificant? Maybe you people are just too arrogant to begin with. Are you also afraid that you'll never experience the technology that brings humans to other solar systems?
>Please give us some good examples of horror.
This is kind of a shit argument. It's very possible that there are no good examples of horror. But that's irrelevant. You're dong a Red herring argument.
>>338134942
>>338134942
>Believing that you're a smell speck in the universe causes less fear than that.
The horror comes from that fact being driven into characters skulls (usually men of learning) by eldritch terrors, not necessarily the truth itself.
It's easy to say "yeah we're insignificant", it's another thing entirely to be trapped on a small boat in the middle of the ocean during a giant storm and feeling that truth, that the world literally doesn't give a fuck about your fragile, meaningless life. Lovecraft's works have the effect of making the reader feel that vicariously through the powers of writing and imagination.
>>338134942
You do not know shit and I do not get what point you are trying to make. Cosmic horror is not about fearing the gods in a Christian sense, as the God of the bible does some horrific shit, but he acts more or less logical and cares about the humans. Believers are rewarded and sinners are punished. Lovecraftian gods are entirely different, they are otherworldly incomprehensible entities that can genozide the whole human race for no specific reason.

In your opinion. People have killed themselves over existential nihilism and some find more horror in the unknowable bearing down on them or at least they can empathize with people in Lovecraft's books rendered insane because they took a glimpse at the unknowable.
>isn't horror unless
That doesn't sound like a strong requirement. Seeing a character you've grown to care for in a story (or hell, imagine experiencing it yourself) succumb to insanity spurred on by the realization of the magnitude of which life matters not and that their are beings whose indifferent actions might unmake a man can certainly be horrific.

That fact is already known to people. If you look at the Sun you realize that you're insignificant already. Heck, people looking at rulers or more important people realize the same. The average pleb hearing about Einstein's genius, realizes that he is an insignificant pleb in intelligence. The presence of an alien entity shouldn't be that much terrifying.
>the world literally doesn't give a fuck about your fragile, meaningless life
But why the fuck do you care about what the "world" thinks? People have always lived in the present anyway even when they are aware of far more important things happening around them.
I feel like the only people who would feel terror are the ones who are so arrogant to think they can impact the world at large and the universe. These are probably the same people who think they can kill the planet because of global warming for example. Normal people are not going to feel much terror, if any at all.
>>338135254
> Lovecraftian gods are entirely different, they are otherworldly incomprehensible entities that can genozide the whole human race for no specific reason.
But that doesn't matter unless you introduce torture for a long time or for eternity. If some powerful entity cause humanity's extermination, that's not anymore terrifying. Everything is going to end, include your life and humanity itself. No one would deny that. Theists or atheists.

The sun isn't sentient and Einstein for all his genius is only human. Lovecraft is pretty niche and people who claim to have existential horrors are not representative of the majority. And this board is full of social outcasts who come from a particular part of the world, so let's be honest, what is popular here =/= what's popular in the rest of the world.
Losing my dick can be pretty horrifying and I realize that fear, especially in an oversexualized society. At the same time, I think I could live with an amputation. Either way, I'll die one day and it's not like I'm going to regret what has come to pass. Any fear isn't as big as people make it out to be. There are always tricks to play on your mind to avoid a horror anyway, whether you know about those tricks or not.
When it comes to death. It's more of a liberation if there is no afteralife. If there is an afterlife, than I should be very worried. But me being amputated, should be the least of my concerns.
I took an extreme example to explain my point, but there are far more things to fear than being "insignificant".

Point of reference is a human being, doesn't have to be you. Anyway, there is nothing to comprehend, so why fear it? You've been dodging that question because it shows how ridiculous the whole Lovecraftian horror is.

>why fear what you don't understand
Because you don't understand it
People have ALWAYS feared what they don't understand
Fuck, that's basic instinct. When you see something unexpected or new you don't know what it's going to do or what to expect. That's basis for fear.
>>338136650
Yeah I'd have a hard time enjoying inspired media too if I put it on a pedestal.

>That response doesn't make sense considering what you're replying to.
It supports the idea that fear doesn't have to be a major component of a relationship with a god figure which you're saying is necessary.
>Except you can't empathize with those type of people...
Except (you) can't empathize with those people and that's alright. In the process leading up to a character glimpsing a Lovecraftian unknown, you might follow someone fracturing their normal relationships, dealing with the violently insane, witness the strange cults setup to worship these outer gods and at the end, a largely normal person on the outset has the rug pulled out from under him. His understanding of everything is lost. Plenty can empathize the steps leading up to recognition of the unknowable and while the unknowable itself might be lost on readers, the feeling of everything you know being wrong isn't so out of the ordinary. Imagine someone leaving an unhealthy relationship with any group that censors the outside world. Being out of your depth. That can be empathized with. The horror is more than the unknowable is my point.hmm, perhaps that's a copout from saying the unknowable is horrific?
>Based on what common experience?
Ask the readers who are a-feared of lovecraft I guess.
You know, I've never been afraid of the unknown or unknowable, but easily accepted that some might be. Now that you've made me think about, maybe the fear IS placed more in the relateable points that lead up to and proceed a character being exposed to it. I can understand fear regarding the loss of sanity...I can appreciate the gravity of indifferent gods, but the potential that there might be some eldritch truth my mind can't comprehend? Again, appreciated, but it doesn't disturb. Maybe you have a point and my knee jerk reaction was to defend an author who's literature I've only known through derivative works and a wikipedia biography.

>People have ALWAYS feared what they don't understand
That's an overused meme in movies, tv shows and comics. People don't necessarily fear what they don't understand.
>that's basic instinct.
No. Basic instinct is curiosity. Lack of that for any reason results in frustration and perphaps sadness. Fear would come about if the thing you don't understand seems to be trying to kill you but that fear goes for anything that looks dangerous.
You fear things that look dangerous, but not all things that you don't understand are dangerous.
>>338137247
>It supports the idea that fear doesn't have to be a major component of a relationship with a god figure which you're saying is necessary.
When there is eternal damnation involved, it does. Anyway, your response doesn't make any sense. What does being humble have to do with anything? You can be humbled and still fear.
>Except (you) can't empathize with those people and that's alright.
You don't know what it's like to take a glimpse of the unknowable. You're delusional if you think you can empathize. You may felt fear reading about them going insane but that's not feeling empathy or putting yourself in their shoes when they were taking a glimpse at something unknowable.
>Plenty can empathize the steps leading up to recognition of the unknowable
Whatever is leading up to the glimpse of the unknowable can applied to anything. What you described can be the lead up to figuring out you got cancer. Of course, there are people out there who have cancer so they'll tell you that's not the case. Thus the author wouldn't be able to trick you. Instead, he has to make up some bullshit that normal people would be fearful of. And attach that to what you described when there is no reason to believe those things could be correlated. You're being tricked by the writer into thinking what glimpsing into the unknown is. He could have written anything else, and you'd be associating it that way.

Something doesn't have to be trying to kill you or be dangerous to be scary my man.
Our instincts tell us to be afraid of certain things, that's the way it goes.
I for one would be extremely scared of a godlike being such as the ones you have been discussing. There is no way to predict what it is going to do or what it wants. It might ignore me, it might kill me.

That's perhaps the case.
I think losing your mind can be very scary. Losing control of your body while being conscious can be scary. But those are separate from a glimpse of the unknowable.
As much as the human mind is limited, I think it's very flexible. For example, people can adapt to certain fear. But they can also fear something that's usually not feared either.
>>338137801
>Explain why people are scared of moths, then
Well it's called an irrational fear for a reason. Some people are afraid of having sex. Some people are afraid and think their penis is shrinking when there is nothing wrong with them (even if a doctor says so).
>>338137801
>There is no way to predict what it is going to do or what it wants. It might ignore me, it might kill me
My point is that you wouldn't be anymore afraid of that than a very powerful natural disaster and from your frame of reference and knowledge, unpredictable. What you're fearing is death, nd going insane. That being can't do to you, what you already can't do to yourself.
I'm not saying you shouldn't fear death or losing your mind. But there isn't really much to fear from the being if that's all he can do. I mean another human can kill you and drive you insane (torture, and complete dark solitary confinement with use of some drugs for a longtime can lead to that).
>>338130509
The building was physical, the rooms too. The only thing that changed was the enemy layout and the occasional force field.
>>338138065
Now you're getting it. I don't want to die or be driven insane. Thus, I can empathize with the characters in the story, and feel frightened for them.
>>338138368
Well my point is that the Chtullu thing can be substituted with an terrorist and the victims of Chtullu are now the prisoners of the terrorist.
Those people still die and can be driven insane. My point was that you don't need Chtullu for that and the glimpse of the unknown isn't really what you'll fear.
>>338112652
So you've played Far Harbor then? What did they fuck up?
>>338138504
I agree, many things could cause those same fears.
But, in my opinion, such a thing as an incomprehensible alien god is quite scary on its own.

Sure because of its power, it can be scary. But I can also see why someone would fear fist fighting a grizzly bear as well. It's instinctual fear when you "smell" something that can kill you.
It's the fear as a result of feeling insignificant that I can't accept, it comes off as pseudo-philosophical.

That line is thin. If you're afraid of being squashed because you're insignificant to X, then you're afraid of being insignificant.
Like I said, replace X with terrorist holding you captive with no way out. The result of you being killed and driven insane before your death remains the same. Others in the thread have made it seems as if humans or the individual being insignificant in the world is what's the biggest fear.
