Bethesda used HP Lovercraft references and actually copied the plot of some of his stories in Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim and Fallout 4.
>>
>>338111148
>citation needed
>>
>>338110825
Why?
>>
I kinda hope they copy Lovecraft actually. I want them to do the scene where they bash Cthulhu in the face with a boat and for everyone to cry about how there's no way that'd stop him
>>
>>338110910
>>338110413
At least they actually try and differentiate themselves from everyone else doing it.
Bethesda just wants to get the quick le epic Cthulhu reference out without really understanding what it actually is.

King in Yellow was weird, it starts out really great and mysterious and then gets more and more subdued towards the end where it's just a story about young french people in love, as far as i understood.
I know it's a collection of stories but they all shared something ominous, except for the last and longest story which just felt really out of place.
>>
>>338110413

BB doesn't just have the occasional reference or cuhrazy tentacle monster. Lovecraft influences form a fundemental part of the game's design and story. Cosmic horrors beyond human comprehension push the events of the game even if you don't immediately pick up on it. I wish more games had something similar to the insight mechanic, that was clever af. It's really like peering through the lens of a madman. The NPCs are all under their influence.

>>338130440
He did it so he could conscript niggers into the war. He was even going to send them back to Africa after the civil war but some ASSMUNCH LIBERAL ARTS ACTOR HIPSTER FAGGOT shot him.

I also dislike this condemnation of racism in society these days. It's trying to push a delusion and because it's not reality the only outcome will be frustration, which will further destroy racial relations. Different races are not equal to each other and some are lesser than others, but that doesn't mean you have to be malicious towards them for it nor does it mean you have to give them special benefits.

The same is happening with trying to push mental illnesses as "normal" in society. The point is to create a state of frustration and confusion for easier manipulation. The current state of capitalism thrives off confusion the same way an energy system thrives off fuel.

>discussing Lovecraft as if Cthulhu was his only idea and mealticket
>like he's on the same level as the faggot that got rich inventing Sonic the Hedgehog.

Most of the Cthulhu mythos stories dance around actually describing Cthulhu. The horror isn't derived from the ZOMG OCTOPUSMAN element so much as the whole "this is beyond my mortal comprehension" aspect. The geometry of Cthulhu's lair, the mysterious trinkets uncovered by researchers, the suspicious and untimely deaths of people involved with Cthulhu, etc. Best way to fail at being "Lovecraft" is to think transplanting some mutant octopus shit into your whatever is compelling.

Well, Ligotti is closer to Lovecraft than some of the movie adaptations or fanfics, desu.

If you want to understand the context of Lovecraft's philosophy, then read Eugene Thacker's "Horror of Philosophy" series, it's really good. Or, alternatively, read Schopenhauer's "World as Will and Representation", either of the two will do.

I really dislike the whole, "scientists developed this after the war in hiding" angle to circumnavigate the whole point of the game's intented aesthetic. Bethesda should have made their own post apocalypse franchise instead of shoving shit like this into Fallout. But who cares anymore. The butchering of the first two game's premise has hit so hard it creates a complete dissonance between the games that slowly worked away any believability if Bethesda attempts at lore for me.

It actually looks pretty fun. Bethesda does better when they aren't failing horribly at trying to make an RPG and just make a le wacky side adventure. Point Lookout and The Pitt were both more interesting than Fo3's main game. I'm better Far Harbor will be better than Fo4.

Of course it won't have an ounce of the delicious goodness that was Dead Money and Honest Hearts (the other two were okay).

It's mindless fun, like a Farcry game. It's actually good for what it is, the problem is that it isn't fucking Fallout.

When I play a Fallout game I want fleshed out factions, interesting settlements, actual quests with multiple ways to go about it, stats that are relevant to dialog, skill checks, stat checks, more than four dialog options, freedom to roleplay (hence the "R" in "RPG"), and a sensical, relevant map.

Fallout 4 has none of that. What it does have is surprisingly good gunplay, decent visuals for what it is, some cool designs, and lots of looting. It's more of an FPS with RPG elements. It's like Bioshock. It's nothing like Fallout.

You see, if this game were "Le Wacky Bethseda Apocalypse Game 2" (with Fallout 3 having been LWBAG 1), then I'd really like it. The problem is that I want more Fallout. I want a followup to New Vegas, but Howard and Hines' punk asses will never let them touch it again because they're so salty that they got out played.

You've really gotta take a break. It's easy to get burned out on that same formula over and over. If they try to do something fresh with it, they're liable to break it. Bloodborne was their biggest success in terms of fucking with the formula without ruining it. DS3 is kind of meh. I'd like it a lot better if they'd fucking patch in Poise.

Yes you don't need to insult my basic knowledge in the franchise that hard. Big MT as a concept wsd just taking the FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY from science fiction to it' up most extreme. Not a bad concept on it's own but writers never consider the implications of lore breaking with this shit. Fallout had "rules" that tied the whole premise together so it made some kind of sense. And as they keep expanding the limits of the world to get around those rules they dilute the identity of the franchise.

Under the current rules with the multiple super science secret base areas they could forward the time line a bit and hsve everyone using actual futuristic technology instead of what would be confused futuristic to people in the 50's, and get away with making a modern dcifi game under the Fallout name with it not technically breaking the lore anymore, because the original premise is only excrdisddd when it's convenient.

I mean, I get they're going for the "ruined world" aesthetic where everything is all shambles and broken and rusty, but that kind of falls flat when previous games in the same series have factions building entirely new cities out of new materials and shit. 100 years prior.

This would all be solved if they set it very recently after the bombs like fallout 1, but nope.

The only game that I wish I owned a PS4 for is Bloodborne.

I seriously get jealous that Sonybabs can have such a great new IP that does Lovecraft justice while still being awesome in terms of gameplay, story and atmosphere.

Dark Souls 3 is a middling venture compared to BB, even though it is still a great game unto itself. It just relies too much on DaS1's nostalgia and the piss-poor PvP to really elevate it to 10/10 status like the original game or Bloodborne.
>>
>>338132516

>>
>>338132605
Why do people instantly bring that up. So far I've found like four weapons and a ring that affect poise...which isn't in the game. That's sloppy as fuck. DS1 had poise, I expect it to fucking work in 3.

If I'm in big, heavy armor, I shouldn't get staggered by a rat brushing my leg. It's a non-functioning piece of the game that needs to be turned on. A literal mistake, or unfinished bit. But it gets defended because "M-MUH PVP".

So not only does it render all the poise-boosting equipment and weapon arts useless, but it basically makes raising equip load pointless. So then you have useless arts, useless gear, and a useless stat. Great game.

Exactly. The horror of Lovecraft's entities doesn't come from them being weird squiggly squid monsters.

The horror of his works is that the universe is completely alien and doesn't care about human existence at all. We've existed for less than a blink of a cosmic horror's eye and we are just a tiny spec of dust floating in a vast, cold universe.

tl;dr: The horror is existential despair and hopeless insignificance.

Well, to be fair, the reason Tolkien is revered as such a great fantasy author is that he wasn't trying to write fantasy. LOTR, The Silmarilion, and all the other shit he wrote to go with it are basically a linguistic/theological project that he spent is life working on. He essentially designed an artificial mythology for a civilization that lacked its own (Britain, who's mythology all came from invading Vikings and later French).

He was like "what would this region's ancient stories be?" Then he set about doing the real linguistics work to figure it out. It was a massive labor of love. He wasn't going "huehue I'm gonna make a le epic medieval fantasy with orc sluts", he was actually trying to do something. That's why what he did was superior to "fantasy authors". Because he wasn't a fantasy author. He was a linguist doing linguistic work.

Britain's mythology was all inherited from the various civilizations that occupied it. Lot of it came from Scandinavia, a ton came from France. Maybe I'm misremembering things, but I thought that it wasn't that Tolkein felt that Britain "lacked" its own so much as that the modern Western world had lost its connection to its mythology. Tolkein was a scholar of the ancient civilizations in the British isles, and he intentionally used aspects of their stories in his works to make them into what he felt were more applicable to people in the modern day.

So it's not so much "never had" as "lost." Later in his life/career Jack Kirby would describe his "Fourth World" comic books the same way.

Ancalagon is a creature of Biblical scale. People mistake Tokien for being like modern fantasy, which is more about imagining another world with rules like ours, but different. Tokein was writing in theological style, so you get a dragon that big. It isn't like Game of Thrones, it's like The Bible.

Like the Babylonian dragon Marduk that Yaweh was said to have taken, and will unleash during the end of days. It's like that, it isn't like Kelly C's draguhnz.

Yeah, I just wish TES games in particular went a little crazier with their lore sometimes. They don't take advantage of it, we usually just get generic simplified shit.

Mostly because a lot of the crazy concepts would be difficult to portray in a game, and the casuals would get confused.

How the fuck is that horror? Humans have always realized they were insignificant, especially when they realized very little things could kill them.

Humans know being trapped in a house with a masked ax-murderer probably isn't very fun, but movies portraying it are easily called horror titles. Horror doesn't have to be unfamiliar and plenty of people exist and believe in a much more cheerful(?) view of life where their god watches over them and will punish the bad and save the good.

With modern medicine, space travel, etc. there's the attitude that we have conquered nature. Humans have also always been egotistical. If Lovecraft was so mediocre then I doubt he would have birthed an entire genre that apparently speaks to some people.

Please give us some good examples of horror. I'm waiting for you to tell me how great shit like It Follows or Babadook or Stephen King is.
