It's been retconned that Ridley died in original Metroid, if it was ever canon to begin with. The manga explicitly states that he was conscious but burning and in pain when Samus kicked his ass. Also in Zero Mission his death animation is different from that in Super.
It's undeniably canon that he died in Super because he fell into chunks, a distinct death animation that hasn't been used since in the series.

Remains of his corpse being kept in secret on the BSL got infected by the X parasite. Not really him, but yeah.
