You can't craft multiple copies of one single item, and the way recipes work you require lots of ingredients to make a more advanced ingredient, so for example you go from raw ores to x ore, then from x ore to x ingot, then you need two of x and y ingots to make Z advanced ingot. You need four of this Z ingot to upgrade a weapon or armor, for example. In a game where you have weapon, shield, head, body and two accessory slots for a single character, and your group can consist of like 50 characters, usually having 10 to 12 on a given battle.
And you can actually fail to craft on any of those steps aforementioned, losing the ingredients and time in the process. Oh, and the default questions of "are you sure you want to craft X?" is on No, so you can't even button mash.
Hope you weren't too far into the chapter, because the English dubs are just now starting to grate on you, and you cannot change them back to the original language unless you start over.
