It honestly looked like the first time EVER playing an first person game (let alone a shooter, or a fast paced shooter) on a controller.
They never aimed and moved at the same time, they arkwardly strafed around with the camera perfectly still, stopped, aimed (poorly) and fired.

Because creating a great movie requires a high level of skill and talent of many, many people working together in a focused direction. Which is actually the same as making video games.

Never did I say otherwise. I play many racing games not really for the systems, story or character development themselves, but because of the relaxing nature that many of them have. But I would never go out and make a review of Grid when I barely put any thought into it and used it as a pass-time while listening to music/podcasts.
And, in this case, we are talking about Doom, a game that has no story, no character development, a competent art-style and not that jaw dropping visuals.
If you are interested in Doom, you want to play the systems, you don't give a damn about how Doom guy feels about killing demons.

the reality of it, in my opinion, is it demonstrates that polygon's brand of journalism isn't particularly vested in the gameplay of games but rather the messages they see the games put forth. "I can't make a video game" would be the same as "I can't make a movie", that is, both taking foundation in the development, not the experience or enjoyment of them.
Playing a game and watching a movie are the equivalents here, because watching is how you experience a movie and playing is how you experience a game.
Also you will not understand the intricacies of game design in the first place if you can't play above a certain threshold where you're proactively using those intricacies, which they aren't, so yes, it's a valid attack on their status as critics .

Yeah the pace in which encounters get more difficult is quite slow. It really starts at around the mid section. Argent Tower leading into Hell is where things get kicked into gear.
The glory kills can have quite some variation depending on what limb you focus or what angle you melee and enemy at, but yeah they do get old rather quick and feel pace breaking unless you equip that one rune which speeds up the animations.

The singleplayer does a good job at capturing what doom is and I don't think it is lacking identity. You are right on the multiplayer though and snapmap is probably not going to change that with its limitations.

There isn't that much of an imbalance. Why isn't their scope removing power fantasies in general? Everything should be simple and realistic. You're not powerful. You're not special. You're just sentient creature xyz performing remedial tasks that anyone else in that universe can.
