I'm surprised there isn't a mod that makes it so if you're allies with a civ for a long enough time they don't turn outright murderous when you get close to a win condition.

Like, I'm not asking for them to make crazy ass deals and sell you uranium or some shit, or purposely sacrifice themselves to buy you time. But just be like "Hey, China has been talking shit behind your back and doesn't know we're tight. What's the plan, broheim?" Just some sort of clique system where out of the current civs in a game, if their super ally is winning they don't mind at all and just keep chugging along.

It's me and my buddy against 10 CPUs on hard,
2 down, 4 were at war with us, 4 were friendly, out of nowhere they decided to all turn against us, so we're fighting a war on multiple fronts, but we're doing good.

Austria was an idiot and gave up their 2nd town in exchange for peace, the peace is over, now there is war, and now I have a great city right up against their capital blowing the shit out of their army as they try to mobilize.

>>338022925
Yeah, siding with CPUs for wars is a joke.

I only play the mode where you can ONLY win when you take over all the other cities, I'm tired of doing a 30+ hour game, and out of nowhere someone gets a science win.

>>
>>338023125
Denmark

Berserkers are great imo

though admittedly I'm not as experienced with the game.
>>
>Hurr every CIV is betraying me even though we were best bros all time what the fuck

Because CIV V is a shit game and the AI is programmed to play and win the game instead of roleplaying and managing an empire.
This is also the reason why the AI acts irrational in trades.
>>
What's the best Civ game to play. Or perhaps an alternative, better series? I've literally never touched a single one.
>>
>>338023376
Alpha Centauri > CIV 2 > CIV 4 > CIV V > CIV 3 > CIV BE > CIV 1
>>
>>338021273
It's a design choice, they said that they wanted AIs that play to win.

I can kinda understand the choice, because things get a little too easy when the AI is willing to let you win just because you're buddies, but I really hope they change it in Civ VI, to make diplomacy feel like more than just postponing hostilities.
>>
>>338023376
Civ V is easy to get into
EL is fun too, but a bit harder
Gal Civ II is still a very solid game
Never played Civ IV, but supposedly it's good
SMAC is hailed as the best 4X game to exist, but I never played it myself
>>
>>338023213
Defensively, and the game doesn't really reflect it. At least not V where their ruler is set to Catherine, in IV you could pick Stalin and he was pretty warmongering.

>I've literally never touched a single one.
If you've never played 4X games then Civilization V with all its expansions is both good and beginner friendly. I want to stress getting the Complete Edition as without the expansions it's pretty bare-bones.
Another good game is Endless Legend, a sci-fi themed 4X with some really unique factions. It also has quests of sort (both faction based and random ones) which help flesh out the lore and provide powerful bonuses for your empire, plus other a bit RPGish elements like hiring, gearing up and leveling heroes who can be used as generals, spies or city governors. Unlike Civ V, EL is already good even without the expansions though I'd strongly suggest getting the biggest ones (Guardians, Shadows, Shifters) as they add new gameplay mechanics and factions.

There are other old and good games too, but I wouldn't exactly recommend them to someone who is a beginner to the genre.

>AI doesn't want to lose their happiness bonus

Who would have thought?

If he has more than one of this luxury that you want but isn't willing to trade it off for a single luxury resource that he doesn't have, he probably hates you. AI is generally relatively fair when it comes to trades when they're neutral and above.
>>
>>338023348

Beserkers ARE great, as are the Ski Infantry they get later. Plus if you play on a map with a lot of water, all their units get the amphibian bonus, to take away the penalty for moving to/from water, which really helps a good amount.

CIV 4 was hailed by /v/ as being the best civ game for a LONG time, even long after Civ 5 came out.

It's only recently that /v/ has been saying civ 5 is better, and it's because it's a new wave of people that have never played 4.

The mods for 5 have pretty much caught up, but Civ 4 with best mods is still best.

There's a wonder that lets you overlap satellites by 1 tile that are launched from its containing city.

Of coarse teleporting is really useful late game when your economy is full roar if going conquest.

Other than that it's all situational. There's a satellite which stops spies from doing anything, and offensive satellites can fuck shit up if there don't have something to knock them down.

Probably the best war theme in the game.

Nothing quite sticks out to me except Brazil, which is up there for creativity.

Most of the war themes are just so quiet and boring. No real power or force to them- which is sad, because I like the idea that they had about changing some of the 'happier' songs (ode to joy, America the Beautiful) into war songs, but they only did it right with vow to thee

His level of aggressiveness was set at 1. When you got to the Modern Era, you could adopt pacifism as a policy, which would roll your aggressiveness back by two. Aggression was an unsigned variable, so when Ghandi inevitably adopted pacifism his aggression would roll back around to 255. On a scale that was designed to only go to 10.
>>
>>338047704
Actually it was playing game on easiest difficulty that lowered aggression of all AI opponents and looped Gandhi's to maximum value, that made it especially surprising.

>>338048179

community patch makes it a lot easier. I like to play domination style games, and I've had vassals with my war score at around 60 and had offers to be my vassal. I guess it depends on the leader. It is used as a preservation technique by the AI, so if they think they are going to get smashed they do that. Loads of useful bonuses and the option to set own levels of tax is pretty boss. Also, get a load of new units as tribute when you change eras too, which really can change how a war is going. I can't recommend the patch enough - I'm on 1745 hours now on Civ V and it keeps it fresh.

>>338020603
In the first game, he becomes the evilest ruler ever once he becomes a democracy.

In games after this, he is still the most likely to nuke other nations, but the least likely to become aggressive in the first place.

Nuking gandhi is (mostly) a meme nowadays.
>>
>>338020603
he's a culture-win type of Civ who is a bit sneaky in his goals. he tends to make himself a pest in passive-aggressive ways, particularly if he gets enough votes in World Congress to propose anything.

in addition to being a World Congress pest, he can also become a religious pest as well.

the nuke thing is actually kind of toned down in Civ 5 ... he doesn't really go aggro, but heaven help anyone who messes with him if you've turned off culture and science wins for options on Deity. Ghandi will backstab your ass eventually ... but they all tend to do that if you're playing a long game of total military domination.
>>
>>338022836
>never goes to war with you

and if you don't care for mods (I love them but some don't) ...

time your wars either on defense or offense to where you're liberating a city that was someone else's (either city-state or another AI's city) in-between a couple takeovers of the aggressing Civ you're looking to obliterate.

in other words, take over a warring Civ's city or two, then liberate one they took over from someone else.

the liberation rolls back the warmonger points racked up from taking another's cities.

and whatever you do, especially in BNW, don't wipe out a Civ. let some other AI take over a final city of someone else ... that's a much greater penalty in warmonger points.

just peace-out when they have one city left and you should be fairly copacetic with the world if you timed it right.

bonus round of advice - what if it's a Civ that hasn't taken over any lands?

let another AI take them over, particularly one you're friends with. so do the sieging and shelling of city defense, and let them get one of their melee units in for the killing blow.

the other Civ will get the heat for it, and you'll mostly be okay in the world opinion.

and if you really wanted that city ... just pay for it from your Civ buddy ... they're expensive to purchase from another Civ, but it can be done rather easily past the Medieval era when you unlock all your gold-generating stuff.
>>
>>338024475
100%.
>>
>>338051662
Alexander is a highly-competitive pest of maximum ass-pain. whatever you do, he wants to do. It goes beyond his CS trait ... he's a general bag of dicks, and his AI is pretty good for trolling.

I tend to stick around when he's nearby though because if you happen to not be the weakest link on a continent, he won't immediately attack you in the early game.

By the time he gets to the mid-game, everyone pretty much hates him, so it isn't difficult to convince other neighbor Civs to want to coalition-stomp him.

If City State AI was actually worth a shit militarily, he'd be a major scourge, but it isn't (they generally get in the way with their military units and have even less concept of attacking other Civs ... they primarily use their units for defense of their CS which is logical but at the same time worthless for a collective CS-based allied attack).

1upt makes for better war-play ultimately. the terrain advantages and disadvantages matter more, you can flank units, and it's not a simple matter of stacking a megazord unit of doom.

people who argue that carpets of doom = stacks of doom miss the finer intricacies of 1upt generally. and while the AI only tends to do carpets for sophistication, a skilled live Civ player can easily defeat any said carpet unless they're sieged on all fronts by multiple AIs.
>>
>>338049294
don't forget XCom units, the cheat mode of V, which allow 40-tile paradrops that the AI can't even into using.

that's my biggest disappoint with XCom tech ... if the AI knew how to handle it, that would be a great equalizer, but I have yet to see an AI in a post-game or conquest-only option ever drop 4-5 XComs on a target city.

And until XCom units were added, Giant Death Robots were the ultimate cheat mode unit in the late game.

At least if the AI has GDRs they know how to use them since it's not much different in programming from that of a horse unit. The AI understands flanking and horse units, so they use them just the same.

Man, Genghis is almost totally broken in BNW.

Provided he's not your direct neighbor, every game among AI plays out pretty much the same.

1) Genghis is geared toward attacking City States and taking them over.

2) AI Civs haaaate CS hostile takeovers (the penalty iirc is greater than taking over an AI Civ's city).

3) By Medieval, Genghis is almost universally shunned by the world, and at that point the other AIs are all asking you and scheming to coalition-fuck Genghis into bolivian

4) Only saving grace for Genghis is that his Keshiks are pretty buff (not as good as Arabia's Camel Archers but close), so he can defend himself fairly well

5) So it becomes a constant cycle of gang-up on Genghis until the AIs finally manage to stomp him.

Ultimately this broke-dick cycle sucks because if you happen to become friendly with Genghis, the rest of the world will look down upon any friendship, so it's not even worth a DoF without any help to Genghis overall.

oh yeah no doubt you can actually be friends with Catherine, and any AI Civ for that matter. I don't doubt that in the slightest.

But Catherine will always be plotting behind your back ... she's just terrible at keeping it a secret. You can see it coming usually well before anything actually happens. Plus other AI spies will readily notify you ... and she has a habit of non-do-it-yourself plotting that involves others and therefore spy AI gets wind of it easily.

I've rolled with Catherine and her glorious 2x strat bonus multiple times. She city-spams so inevitably she'll have tons of whatever strat you need to trade with her for cooperation.

1) are you playing on Deity or above-Prince
>probably yes

2) are you not aware of the bonuses AI gets while playing on Chieftain difficulty against you

>definitely yes

http://www.civfanatics.com/civ5/difficulties

on higher difficulty levels you're playing for 'difficulty' with hands tied behind your back while the AI gets more arms more or less.

so if you wanna win on those levels, you're ultimately going to have to play tall and not wide (max 4-5 cities you build yourself).

it's impossible to keep up with city-spam with the AIs on higher difficulty because they start out with more units than you from the get, and they can build more units faster than you.

~4 towns is usually best case scenario anyway. Look out for great town spots with
>Resources, preferably ones you don´t have yet
>fish tiles often make for very good tiles
>next to rivers, mountains or the coast (You should always have coastal cities)
>defended by mountains, hills and/or other rough terrain so you can´t get attacked from all sides

Also the more towns you have the more research costs.

>>
>>338056813
Correct, if you are doing a long-play game where you have plenty of time to go for domination, eventually it'll come down to you and your buddy AI left ... and they'll immediately turn against you.

I did this a few times ... setting it up so where it's just one ruler to dominate the world type longplay game ... one time I had Rome as a bro, and they were more than happy DoW'ing everyone I wanted to surgically-eliminate whenever I got to that point. They rolled with me over them, every time.

And when the final rival was destroyed in full ... immediate hostility, the very next turn.

Theodora is good to add against if you don't care about religion

Fuck Austria, that shit is useless, she'll eat 2-3 CS and ultimately get stone-aged by other AIs (and you can't undo Venice or Austria's peaceful CS eating)

England and Portugal are good testy resting bitch face rivals, and they're both naval-capable so if you have a coastal cap be prepared for their mid-game bullshit

Spain is a toss-up. It's kind of like Theodora, Spain loves their religion-spam. Theodora ultimately imo is a little more respectful and easy to handle in diplomacy ... Spain will generally ignore your requests to keep their filthy missionaries out of your business. And Spain has a nasty habit of plopping a settler right on top your shit despite being halfway across the world, so there's that.

As for Egypt, if you like building Wonders, aw yeah ... but you'll probably start out on shitlands in desert, so your mileage for Wonder-whoring will vary depending upon if you got a start next to a lot of flood plains.

America is Generic Civ until the mid-late game, but their tile-buys are fucking awesome early-on, and their sight bonus is great for harder levels where you might have to deal with an early AI zerg rush.

if you make it to the Renaissance with America, you're golden. manifest that destiny and fucking own the map with plenty of lulz from there.

reason why map generation favors Venice's cap for pregnant abundance of everything is because that's the only city they'll ever have.

so if they expand they're only doing it via puppeting on their further conquests or through merchants of venice to peaceful-takeover the city states.

Venice needs lush resources in their cap to do anything beyond getting eaten within 100 turns, and the map-generation knows it, so they almost always spawn in a choice spot as the AI with tons of goodies.

forgot about Dido, "she's fucking crazy" is 100% accurate. one of the more unpredictable AIs in the game, she will turn on anyone on a dime, and it's not always easy to see it coming.

only good reasons to have Dido in the game ...

1) Dido is an equal-opportunity troll in the sense that she pulls her crazy shit on everyone and not just you

2) her cities come with harbors and she prioritizes coastal builds, so when you inevitably give her the Carthaginian Peace (destroy all of Carthage forevermore), you'll have nice connections to your cap city pre-built usually for you (provided the harbor isn't randomly sold or destroyed in the process)

Washington's AI is geared toward spying.

He gets in hot water because he generally competes with everyone on everything, but not on the mega-troll level that Alexander does.

But the spying ... oh, the spying. If you got a tech thefted, chances are good it's him or Elizabeth that did it.

But you can make that worth your time in Washington's case because he's not too difficult to DoF and keep the peace with from there.

And as much as he spies and thieves, he's doing it to others as well ... and he's likely to snitch any AI bitches as well. Washington will absolutely runtelldat right to you on anyone doing anything behind your back.

You're not the only one. Because Alexander competes in everything beyond city-state stuff, and because he has those early-game plus-plus unique units, he's actually quite competent in the long game and tends to hold his own no matter how many people are against him.

AI Greece is pretty damn good for survival and thriving, almost every game. Alex almost never gets destroyed by other AIs ... Firaxis did a good job in concept and application on him.
>>
>>338058831
One of the reasons he's so good is that his ability runs on auto-pilot, the AI doesn't have to do anything special beyond secure the alliances (and they have shittons of extra gold). It's hard to fuck that up even for the AI. Then he snowballs with all the CS resources and happiness. Combine that with his aggression and forward settling tendencies and you have one of the best leaders.

>>
>>338060462
Absolutely.

One thing that's always blown my mind though ...

How in the ever of evers does Hiawatha almost always seem to thrive and survive as well?

1) his trait is garbage, and the longhouses are not as good past their era when the % bonuses of the generics are ultimately better than his + based production from them

2) they don't get movement bonus advantage on normal (non-arboreal) maps because the game mechanic treats his unit moving from forest to non-forest like a turn-ending event (different from how Inca and hills play out for movement greatness)

essentially Hiawatha is disadvantaged the whole time compared to the others, and he always seems to make it work in my games in spite of it.

maybe it's his city-spamming with the AI bonuses that ends up being better overall for him than the weight of his shitty design. i dunno for sure.

but whatever the case, Iroquois are rarely destroyed before you get to them, much like Alexander.

>>338061068
Expansion works for the AI because of their happiness, gold, and production bonuses. Hiawatha I think can afford to keep a whole bunch of forests around for his longhouses without messing with his economy as much as it does the player. I'm not sure but the building might actually be an advantage for the cheating injun.

numbers-wise, it's a very transitory advantage dependent upon multiple trees in the workable lands.

over time, the %-boosting generic buildings will have the numbers advantage over Hiawatha's + hammer per forest setup on the longhouse.

after Medieval, he's super-disadvantaged because of it, yet by that time the AI happiness bonuses and building time reduction bonus keeps him afloat to where a live player in the same situation won't have that.

It's because Sejong never builds an army and rarely expands.

On the off-chance that he survives and manages to expand (which probably won't happen unless he spawns on a continent by himself far away from the warmongers) he's practically unstoppable.
>>
>>338062839
Look at the CS Biases. He has 8 in Protective.
>>
>>338062340
Attila's an unpredictable mega-troll for strategy, but one thing always remains clear ... if you're his neighbor, he will sooner rather than later attack you.

He's one of the early-era guys who will show up with the battering ram on his neighbors, almost every time.

That unit's uniqueness is pretty shit, but his AI knows how to use it, and he will absolutely crush a peaceful-ish neighbor more than half of the time, no matter if it's an AI or you.

the problem with Civ for live players without regard to difficulty level is that if you're engaged in one or more early-game wars, the AI will tech up and snowball past you with ease.

you simply must avoid too much aggression early especially in BNW era without the science and culture wins turned off ... and even then, it's not a surprise when, even with the method of spy-thefting techs to keep up with AIs and their bonus-heavy-ness on harder levels ... you'll still end up being way behind on tech.
>>
>>338063180
Correct. It's dependent upon Sejong's initial placement.

An isolated Korea is a best Korea for the AI. They're basically OP for science-snowball with their unique trait.

>England's Both Units
Longbow archer can seige cities from a safe distance like 1000 years before artilleries. Absolutely uncounterable nightmares when offline assuring that you can get free cities as soon as you research machinery. If you spend time upgrading an archer to composite by fighting city states without capturing them, then by the time Machinery rolls around, you can have 45% stronger double attacking longbowmen who can essentially solo entire cities.

Their other unit, the ship of the line, completely dominates the ocean a few dozen turns after Longbowmen allow you to get entire cities to 1 hp in like 2 turns even without upgrades, since Maritime upgrades are so devastating. You can also hit knights or other contemporary ground units from afar and kill them in 1 hit without even trying.

>The Huns
While their unique Horse Archers are fine I guess, they also get a funny little unit called the BATTERING RAM. That asshole has the funny aspect of being the replacement for archers, which means your scouts can BECOME them.

When this happens, you can literally without any difficulty seek out a nearby civ and just slam into their capital twice and take it.

>A
Greece. Companion Cavalry and Hoplites have the bonus of being incredibly fat with numbers, allowing you to either wage early war, utilize your unique ability to come back easily from bullying every city state ever, or go around killing all barbarian camps FOR the city states for early near-permanent alliances. It's a fantastic mix of power and diplomatic capability

>AA
The Zulu's
The Impi is just brute force and will work well against even riflemen
When with an Ikanda (I think) they gain strong free promotions that allow them to fuck up everything on land in their era
The only things they can't beat are Longbowmen, provided they are on Hills/Great Wall area, Keshiks and Camel Riders
>>
>>338066794
same anon here on the brain-thinking jab, I actually didn't intend to douche it up to you ...

general tips on the reading section for that tome of what the UUs do ...

1) you're looking for UUs that carry their promotions as you upgrade them, like Aztec's Jaguar, England's Longbowman, et cetera. with England's LBM, you get a massive advantage in land wars because you can extend your ranged units outside of the firing range of AIs if you're doing it right, they're very OP due to promo-carrying

2) once you figure out which do what via playing the game and consulting lists like this or Filthy's tiers videos or Marbozir's advice videos, it'll start confirming what they're saying

ultimately you have to play the game for more than a few hours to git gud, but if you're any kind of competent at chess/checkers/card-games/jrpgs/other strategy-heavy stuff, you're gonna conquer Civ 5 like the rest of us

as for needing to be a genius to play it, hardly ... talking on 4chan and being IRL genius is almost entirely mutually-exclusive, imo. and I'm far from being a fucking god-tier player myself, so there's that, I'll readily admit

but if you're not retarded, you'll get the game to be fun even if you're primarily just stuck on Chieftain for the duration of your Civ 5 gaming, there's nothing wrong with treating it like a giant Garry's Mod type sandbox to just fuck about and do what you want
>>
>>338068118
They are fantastic units, but I mostly meant from an offline standpoint. Camel Archers are good, but slightly outclassed by Keshiks offline since Keshiks ignore hill costs while Camel archers can be easily bottlnecked by it, along with the Mongolian ability for 1 mounted movements.

Offline Arabia is all about utilizing heavy religion and trading anyway.

I have a completely different tier list for online play.

While I'm at it, lets do UB.

>AAA
>Ethiopia AND Maya
At the same time, both the Stele and the Pyramid are probably the best UB's in the game, and I count them at the same time because other than a slight discretion, they both fulfill the exact same purpose: Very fast incredibly high early game faith production to the nth degree when spamming cities. Ethiopia's Stele is available slightly earlier, but due to this, if you build it as soon as the game starts instead of building a scout, you can get first pantheon (Granted some lucky fuck doesn't find 2 religious states) by turn 12. The Pyramid is arguably better because it equals the same amount of faith (+2) while also providing +2 tech, offsetting the cost of making a huge civ so early. Conversely, Maya's UA pairs with this building a bit better, cause if you beeline for Theology, by the time you found your religion, you can Long Count straight into an improved religion by turn 120 or something incredibly early as shit like that. Ethiopia's ability is essentially turned off by spamming their broken ability.

>AA
>Arabian Bazaars
Anyone whose played Civ 5 knows exactly what I'm talking about. What's better than luxuries? DOUBLE LUXURIES. If you have even like 3 cities parked in even half decent locations, you have more luxuries than your bottom 3 competitors combined. You can essentially run the entire world and get free money all over the place. Their starting bias for desert assures that you get the semi-rare incense in bulk and essentially have a monopoly, and even have the foresight to possibly get first religion with Desert Folklore.

>F
>Iroquois
I sure do love a unique building that's in every considerable way (barring the small possibility of spawning next to LITERALLY 22 forests) worse than the base building. Iroquois is a civ that sucks so much ass in every way. Their UA for roads barely even works.

Gandhi is the least likely to denounce you. Until the Atomic Age where his likeliness to go to war changes from a 1 to a 9. Which is actually hard coded into the game. But even with that, since India doesn't build much military, you will probably have more military than he does late game. So all he does is denounce you, then never attacks. Since the AI only attacks if you have an equal or smaller army.

And plus, anyone who is half decent at the game will have won before the AI gets nukes.

True, but if you're looking at it from a starting spawn, it's better off Tundra than flat Desert.

yeah it was an idea Firaxis needed to bake a little longer, and they never bothered to patch it so that it wasn't a major disadvantage for everyone but the AI.
>>
>>338070075

In higher difficulties, you actually want aggressive AIs to start next to you. Because you know all they're going to do is build an army and attack you. A few walls and archers and you will destroy their first attack, then they leave you alone. And if you have money, you can bribe them to go attack other civs and avoid the war entirely.

Its jerks like Sweden, Spain, Germany and Siam you have to worry about. Because they'll smile and trade with you for 200 turns. Even forgive you for expanding next to them. Then suddenly out of nowhere, they attack you. And fucking Siam and Sweden NEVER surrender. Even when you have 3x as much military, they keep fighting.

>>338071604
Civ has always been pretty dumb with it's leader choices.

Civ 2 had the whole "every civilization needs a male and a female leader", which for some cases, lent itself to completely made up leaders who aren't even semi-legendary.

Civ 5 obviously had to meet some sort of equality quota, which is why there are so many female leaders. Elizabeth, Maria Theresa, Maria I and Isabella are all solid choices. Catherine and Wu Zetian are certainly debatable as to who you get to represent them. Russia you have Peter the Great and China you have the Gaozu emperor, but aside from those two stand out choices, the next step up probably would be those female choices, that is of course you opt out of picking filthy commies as their representatives.

Theodora, Hiawatha, Dido, Boudicca, Bismark and Gandhi are all ridiculous choices for their leaders, either because they have better male equivalents, they don't exist or they never even led their particular civilization.

Oh and the Shoshone maybe a good civ, but they are the biggest literal who faction in the game. At least pick the Cherokee or Sioux.
>>
>>338072674
depends on what you're classifying for better.

overall Inca or gtfo, but if you absolutely go Science, Maya are better.

Aztec have a great early-game Jaguar for domination, but they're often jungle-based and it takes much longer in tech-getting to do anything about jungle to make them more than a dead tile of pure food, plus it takes longer to chop jungle. and then there's the problem of getting spawned nowhere near lakes, which the map tends to do for Aztecs when you're playing as them

Pocatello's starting city trait of getting extra tiles is nice, but vs. Inca in comparison, it doesn't matter beyond easy land-claiming. they outclass America in the comparison, but not Inca

Inca is best New World Civ, straight-up.
>>
>>338073153
Inca is shit if you don't get any mountains and don't plan on early wars. The Aztec can out-populate anyone else on the map, which does spawn them next to fresh water unless you're playing Great Plains or some shit.
>>
>>338073153
Aztecs have an extremely nice UA, but a weak UU because of how little action it's going to see. This is the same with the Maya, only the Maya UA lends itself to a more varied victory type because you have the choice of great person.

Poland, Arabia and Babylon are the best civs overall. No contest.

>>338022064

>>338073139
>>338073153
I agree that the Incas are the best.

The Maya are arguably more reliable for early snowballing science than the Inca due to the guaranteed pyramid science and the free GS but the Inca have more potential in the long run due to growth.

As for the Aztecs I haven't played enough games with them to know if they have more reliable growth potential than the Incas. Seems like lakes would be rarer than mountains with nearby hills. Their other bonuses are definitely worse than the awesome hill movement and free roads though.

Pocatello is overrated.
>>
>>338058831
I find Siam's Ramkhamalalamawhambang more dangerous as an AI than Alex. His elephants are so ridiculously strong that in a battle between AIs, it'll easily allow him to crush his neighbours and go super wide.

>>338073482
Poland Arabia and Babylon aren't New World.

>>338073410
in BNW population and tall is key, but unlike Aztecs I can get a random map generated 8x out of 10 with nearby mountains for based Incas.

Aztec UU no question is better, but you're extremely limited in build-time for taking advantage, which is the problem with a lot of early-game-based Civs.

for an example, take America's Minuteman ... once Renaissance is reached, it has an insane amount of time to build/buy the units, compared with Inca or Aztec with their UUs.
>>
>>338073893
>Pocatello is overrated.
I wouldn't go that far. Pathfinder is an unbelievably useful unit. The land grab is always a bonus (and if you going down the liberty tree, can be doubly beneficial due to slow border growth). Defensive land bonus is also nice, especially when attacking from recently occupied cities.

Their unique cavalry is dogshit though.
>>
>>338045414
for some reason monty is always my bro, but the rest of the civs basically beg me to betray him. They then declare me a war monger for betraying him the hypocrites.
>>
>>338074070
Not all UUs are meant to be spammed. The Jaguar exists to kill barbs, generate culture and steal a worker. Then you can basically disband them, your enemies can try to take your 24 pop cities any day.

Atlatlists exist to give you an instant archer without picking up the tech. Slingers exists for balancing purposes because they're worse than the generic unit.
>>

>>
>>338073893
Aztec are a slow early slog, but they can be great past the point where Jungle tiles can be handled.

Compared to Inca, their movement bonuses happen from the get, regardless of where they are to start.

Shoshone are overrated for sure because the extra land via settler plops is like America, if you're plopping in a resource-limited area it really does little good until you can fast-track population later, only advantage beyond America is that you don't have to buy those extra tiles. but you still gotta work'em

and their cavalry replacement is good but it definitely comes quite late. the makeup on that is that their scouts are the best uu for getting to choose bonuses from goodie huts, but after the early game they're useless beyond exploration
>>
>>338074354
you wouldn't be disbanding Jaguars because their promos are carried on upgrade.

and that 24 pop takes a lot longer than Ghandi due to the start bias being in problem jungles.

While some of the leader choices like Boudicca and Theodora are pretty dumb, I actually thought the inclusion of Catherine for Russia was funny. Especially since they put a bunch of horse hooves in the theme for Russia. Its like the designers did it intentionally.

And while I think Emporor Chin should be the only logical choice as the leader for China, I can't exactly hate Wu Zetian. She was hot. I was more annoyed that China focused on war instead of science. All the more reason to have two or three leader choices per civ in Civ VI.

>Oh and the Shoshone maybe a good civ, but they are the biggest literal who faction in the game. At least pick the Cherokee or Sioux.
Originally the designers were going to use a different Native American tribe. Can't remember which one it was, the Zuni or Pueblo or something. Someone from the southwest. But when they contacted the actual tribe, they refused to have their culture depicted in a video game. So they had to pick a different native tribe. This was the early concept art for them.

I'd like to see the Olmec, Hopi and Cherokee in Civ VI. I'd also like to see the Zuni, but they're rather obscure and probably were the ones who said no.

I'd say the Inca and Maya are tied for best civs in the whole game. They're just so versitile that you can do anything with them. The Inca can even take a Tundra start and come out with the highest population. If I want to play an easy game, I just pick one of them.

I am honestly enjoying this game. I don't understand how people can give a game a 0. Yea its not great but its not bad. There are some technical bugs that I am sure will be fixed up in updates. Graphics are about as good as most late previous gen games. the sound is effects are good. Gameplay is fun. Your character seems to move slow but once you buy the proper gear it improves greatly. the fact that you can change your weapon attachments during a firefight is pretty cool. The story is mediocre but its not horrible. The Co-Op multiplayer is surprisingly very fun. The multiplayer has a lot to unlock and will provide any player with hours of gameplay. I honestly would give this game a 7-7.5 but I am giving it more because I feel the 0 ratings are from people who played the opening and stopped there. most of the 0 ratings showed up not too long after the games release and there is no way that they gave it the time to rate it fairly

While Babylon does get a free great scientists and technically will get more science for the first 100 turns or so, you can argue that the Maya get their Shrine out while Babylon is still teching up to Writing. And after you make 3-4 cities with pyramids in them, Maya will make up the science benefit Babylon gets with its great scientist. Basically, I see the Maya as much better at early game science rushing. Babylon of course gets great scientists over time and probably rule the mid game for science. Korea surpasses them in late game however (if they live that long).

Poland is so fucking fun just on a pure running riot level for OP-ness, indeed

Those culture-advantages, particularly the free policies every era, really play into any kind of win you want.

And Winged Hussar is fantastic due to its carry-over promos on upgrade, plus you can build them in any era via upgrade if you take the one policy where you can buy Landsknechts because the upgrade is the Hussar.

in general Lancers are garbage, but Poland's one of the few that not only has a decent UU but also makes the Lancer-path on upgrades worth a shit

as long as you have a decent army to defend you, you should generally focus the cities on food, not just to get more dudes to work tiles but also because more pop = more science

make sure you manage the happiness so the city growth don't stagnate. try to get the circus maximus fast. try to discover more civs to trade luxuries with. don't settle too many cities, as each take up 4 happiness, but if you have much excess happiness then you need to find a place to settle.

if you're doing war and conquering cities you might want to burn them down so you don't get the unhappiness from occupation

if you're a new Civ 5 gamer looking to get gud, a great learning tool of a mod (total cheating but good for learning wat do) is In-Game Editor.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=436912

it's cheating because you can guarantee yourself a win with it, at any point, but in terms of learning how to do things the best way, it's invaluable to newbs as far as being able to see what other AIs are doing when they're doing it.

just from a pure get-gud-faster standpoint, it can help anyone new figure things out faster than anything else available.

IGE def does pretty much everything as well ...

if you're playing Ghandi for example and Genghis happens to be your neighbor, when he zergs you on turn 30, instead of scrapping an hour's time based on bad fortune, IGE will let you delete the Mongol units, spawn multiple units of your own, et cetera.

your mileage from there varies ... if you learn better via non-IGE trial and error, that's cool, but simply taking off the pressure of potential hours wasted by bullshit luck is valuable beyond anything else imo.

I wish I had known about IGE prior to getting the game and playing it for 2-3 years, I could have figured it all out much faster with it.

For everyone else just looking to make sure their playthroughs are never wasted when starting up Civ 5 ... it's like training wheels for learning how to ride a bike.

this isn't promo'ing a mod for people who know what they're doing, and you know 4channers are so dumb that they can't win on Settler.

and maybe if they're that dumb they probably shouldn't be playing Civ to start, but if you want to learn fast, it's a good tool to show you shit you wouldn't otherwise see, hence speeding up the learning process by not throwing away tons of time per early hours put into Civ.
>>
>>338078842

Once you learn all the ways to cheese the AI, yes. Even Deity can be considered easy if you know about bribing and play someone like the Maya.

Ive logged 1500 hours multiplayer and single, also have beaten diety as multiple civs on pangea maps.

Top tier
Mongolia keshiks
Arab camel archers
Aryssia siege towers
Hun Battering ram
Usa b17
England longbows
Zulu impi
China crossbows

All the others are only okay. They aren't game breaking or overly strong. The ones above have one or more of the following qualities
>can attack more than once per turn
>have extra attack range
>can move after attacking
>have a significant strength bonus for the era

A special note goes to both the shoeshone units. Pathfinders can upgrade directly to composites and crossbows super early, without researching the techs with ruins, and their calvary is extremely good on defense because of extra movement.

If you want to get good, play multiplayer against people that are good. They will absolutely crush you, and only by seeing what they do will you git gud.

The AI plays exactly the same at all difficulties above prince, and their war movements make them laughably easy to beat at any level. The major difference is how far ahead they start from you. On diety they are an entire era ahead of you in tech.
>>
>>338079308

>>
>>338072565

It probably has nothing to do with your actions and everything to do with your progress. The Germans in this case are trying to impede you without committing suicide in the process. The AI will gang up on whomever is winning in hopes of surpassing them. Many "irrational" diplomacy results come from the AI finally deciding that it needs to be more proactive in dealing with you or others.
>>
>>338079062
>snakes can now be cute
What is going on with this world?
>>
>>338072565

the AI is trying to win too. it usually has 1 'chosen son' that it favors. a few will directly harass you with war, land grabbing, etc and are barely above barbarian tactics. and the rest are sheep for the chosen son to consume to get stronger.

you'll typically see the chosen son civ take 1 or 2 other capitals relatively early

>>
>>338079393
>>338079396

>you can fulfill any win condition on emperor just by have the right build order
You can win the game on deity just depending on your starting location. Really the difficulty in Civ games is pointless. Its not a measurement of how hard the game is, but how long it takes to overtake the AI in science and gold growth. On Emperor, you can pass the AI in the Medieval era. On Immortal and Deity, it takes the Renaissance or Modern era. And you have to focus more on expansion and military than usual.

That's literally it.

If you can beat prince, you can beat diety. The ai plays exactly the same. If you're cheating to catch up in tech then you are basically playing at prince level, and not learning anything.

Nowadays chancellor is comparable to the president in Murica but at Bismarck´s time there was still a german Kaiser (so still a monarchy). Granted that Kaiser didn´t have as much power as back in the day of absolutism he still had a big impact on politics. William II also fired Bismarck after they had a falling out with each other.

The reason Bismarck is considered a "leader" is because he was instrumental in creating the german "Bund/Reich".

>>
>>338080425
you're not telling anyone who's playing it for the first time ever anything that they wouldn't learn faster via IGE.

and while you're right about how the game sets up difficulty, it's more about getting to that point faster via not wasting games early on where you didn't realize stupidly-easy signs like "hey, I wonder why all those rival's units are showing up near my border" and shit like that.

in other words, I didn't have IGE to learn faster, I did it the hard way, and looking back, I wish I had discovered IGE because it would have sped up my ability to dominate the game faster than doing it purely through the school of hard knocks.

it's not about cheating or any other bullshit, it's about speeding up the learning curve for fresh players.

and obvs once you know what you're doing with the basics, there's no need for IGE. but until that point, it's not a bad fall-back to make sure you're not an hour or two into a game and suddenly you have to restart because insert every fucking thing that can go wrong happening here.

seriously, use IGE if completely fresh to Civ, worry about 'get gud' later, and of course, nobody using IGE is 'gud' if they're still using it past the first handful of games played.
>>
>>338080924
Celts are probably the best civ from gnk. The religion bonus is not to be underestimated. The production and gold you can get are vital to making an unstoppable machine. The spearmen upgrade can guarentee you a religion by turn 40 on quick and they can pillage and move in the same turn for free healing and attacking
>>
>>338081045
"Stadt" means "city. "Staat" means "country". That´s in german but i guess "stadtholder" in dutch is closer to "statthalter" in german who is tasked with administration for a certain province. He´s still serving under someone higher than him though (usually).
