OP, look up ZRP. Zone Reclamation Project. It's a clean, simple fix-up that will give you a more stable vanilla experience. After a first run, check out the other, more involved mods out there.
But fuck Complete 2009. It's fucking garbage.
Also, put the difficulty on Master. It makes damage realistic for both you and the enemies. Otherwise it will take multiple headshots to drop one bandit.

Always play on the highest difficulty: it makes everyone take more damage take more damage (not just you), and it's where most of the game's tension and challenge come from.

Very few places are safe, always be on the lookout
Don't expect bullets to go where you want them to
You can die extremely easily and without much warning, so make sure you quicksave frequently

I've played a bit and it seems pretty good, except some weird part with a retextured Bandit demon cut scene in the garbage. How much of the story did they change?
I just started playing SOC. Is there any way to turn on subtitles? I don't speak russian, though I will admit it is very tense to have someone point a gun at me and yell a language I can't even discern tone from.

Do not use Complete mod. It makes the game too easy and ruins the overall feel, which is a big part of the game. Play on Master difficulty. It makes ALL shots, yours and the computer's, more likely to actually hit what they're aimed at. Don't use the crosshair. Iron sights add to the immersion.

Should I play in chronological order or release order?
I'm assuming from the way you phrased that that Chernobyl came out first, then Pripyat then Clear Sky. I can't think of any examples where a prequel was made before a sequel.

Release order is SoC, then CS, then CoP
Games are meant to be played in release order as the story kind of tie into each other (CoP less so), and the improvements from one game carry on to another, so you'll miss some features playing them out of order.
like the other anon said, CS is definitely the weakest of the series and is more apt to be skipped (it doesn't matter storywise to CoP anyways). Though being the weakest of the 3 games doesn't mean it's bad, just not as good

Actually, Clear Sky came second. Pripyat came third and finishes out the story. Playing in release order is also recommended, as you get the story as it was intended, and you can also appreciate the changes each game brings.
