If they focused 99% on the gameplay instead of the story TNO might have been good, instead we got decent gunplay that was unfortunately ruined by a ham-fisted story and cutscenes. Wolfenstein games always had a minimal story; infiltrate this place destroy the objective / kill the baddie. If they had named the game "Inglorious Bastards" I would have been fine with it because that's what it reminds me of.

Both are good, but Doom wins because Wolfenstein had a bit too much unnecessary story in it. Not that much that it would ruin it, but enough that the game felt a bit dragging at times.

>>337985531
What are you trying to run it on, a toaster?
>>337985857GTX 750
>>337985176
No it isn't. Both are shooters and despite the far lengthier plot bits, Wolf TNO and TOB's fighting parts are very much in the same spirit - Open arenas with caches of armor and ammo lying around, and there's even a large melee takedown focus in both (with extra health gained too, like in Doom). Larger fights in TNO will involve the more sci-fi enemies like drones, Ubersoldats or Panzerhunds alongside smaller regular nazi enemies and they can feel quite a bit like combat set pieces from the new Doom. The set piece before the tram in TOB is a great example, there's easily 30+ enemies on that section
>>337985845
>that's a fatal flaw in a game like that.
More like flaw in marketing, the game was clearly aiming to be more melee than shooting action
>>337985845
It's designed around the sword, the guns are there to weaken massive hordes of weak enemies

>Weapons which are completely imbalanced, the grenade launcher is practically required to take down the hardest enemies or else you will die
>Ridiculous underwater jew and nazi space segments

A lot of people mistake TNO's story for other parts of its narrative. The actual plot was pretty boring, but BJ was such a lovable goofball psycho that it made up for everything else. His grizzly and occasionally psychopathic monologues contrasted his persistent dumbness made him really fun. The alt history was usually interesting too. >>337988310
It's possible. Some anons have been debating it but the game doesn't exactly spell it out definitively. The two main theories are either you're some ancient medieval badass Doom Guy who ran around hell forever until they dropped a temple on you, or you're the Doom 1/2/64 Doom Guy and there's a single hell that touches multiple dimensions and you got your super Doom Slayer immortal powers at some point in Doom 1 or 2, probably 1 where you die and go to hell in episode 1.

I'd prefer something more... alive. Something that looks like a hideous abomination of flesh and machinery hooked up on a sort of life support system that's writhing and thrashing around. The ending text describes the icon of sin with limbs thrashing about, destroying Hell as it dies. I'm thinking a the upper body of a gargantuan demon that makes Doomguy look like an ant fused to the wall with tubes extruding from it and giant limbs that could easily swat you like a fly.

Wolfenstein is better overall, especially comparing Uber to Nightmare difficulty. Doom's Nightmare difficulty is literally just monster damage turned up.

I like to think that you're the doom guy from the end of Doom 2 in the new Doom. When you killed the massive demon at the end of 2 it states you're trapped in hell. The demons in hell, fearing your power trap you in the sarcophagus and since time passes different in the hell dimensions it's like thousands of years have passd for you.
UAC come reclaim thier wrecked Mars base and start experiments with hell energy and that's where the new doom starts.

>>337992120
it is. Doom 1, 2, and apparently 64, are all canon, in fact, all the wads are too, and this is that same doomguy. this is just another universe he's woken up in

Lovecraftian themes are severely underused or at least misused so it's not difficult to make something interesting out of it, plus the medieval thing fits right in with it

Doom is a game with absolutely no personality, made by a team of incompetent and passionless nobodies. Everything about the game is shoddy. The animations, enemy designs, sound effects, half-assed approach to the "old school" gameplay, etc. It is the biggest example yet of a bad game that is being carried by the name slapped on the box.
Wolfenstein actually had some intelligence and creativity behind it. It's a memorable game that seems like it was made by people who cared. For that alone it is a hundred times better than Doom.

I enjoyed TNO, but it is a bit overrated by people here. The emphasis on plot was a double edged sword; while the characters were surprisingly likeable, the story was poor and it hurt the pacing quite a bit. The enemy designs were also fairly weak and the difficulty skewed low. It was still a solid game, and far better than the awful 2009 Wolfenstein, but Doom tops it in pretty much every way.
I am hoping we get more Wolfenstein from MachineGames though.
I like how Rise of The Triad was easily the fastest game posted ITT, yet is probably the shittiest in every other regard.

Having only played TNO, that one's the one to get if you asked me.
Doom 4 has some questionable level design at some points but it made me think what the originals did differently. The secrets were the same in theory but i think the biggest difference that you feel is how the secrets don't flow together with the level. You fight a bunch of monsters then stop to platform down somewhere to find it. Rather then it flowing through the level and combat.
I had the same issue with the Shadow Warrior remake. The secrets are there but since they don't flow they just feel like neat detours that don't add anything or its just a upgrade sitting on a separate path. I fear Doom1/2/Plutonia/Doom1/2 map design in general along with games like Hexen will never be reached because of this in terms of map design.
>>337996030
Basically this, I can't stand linear corridor shooters.
When I like 'open world' games in that they have large wide open maps that encourage exploration and ofter alternative routes and tactics for the player to use.
Then that's what I call the Ubisoft 'open world' model. Well you just perform the same gameplay over and over again with a few you pointless collectibles
>>337996046

SP D44M feels alot faster especially with the jump movement rune. I don't understand why that shit isn't a default feature on the MP. The MP feels like its dumbed down to the speed where everyone is slightly more jumpy Halo levels of movement. Which makes it hard to really prevent being 2 v 1'd sometimes because its hard to dodge one person let alone multiple.

So I've been thinking of getting Doom, but I held off after hearing how poorly received the multiplayer beta was. I just want to know a few things. Can the cutscene-esque melee kill things be turned off? Is it actually "Hell" like in 1/2 or is it some faggy "they were actually aliens XDDD" thing from the movie? How fast is the gameplay in singleplayer? I don't mind if it's not as fast as the og games as long as it's not like cowadooty pacing. Do the enemies still drop a shitton of healing like in the trailer they showed last year?
>>338000607

>>337983612
I finally got around to playing Wolfenstein while I waited for Doom 4 to download this weekend. It's alright, and the story was okay up until the finish, but if I had paid full price for it I would have been pretty annoyed. It's a decent game but it's nothing amazing. The weapon feel for a lot of the guns was mediocre at best, and the sound design was a bit tinny in a few places which makes the whole game feel a bit light and "modern."
I'm also not crazy about how they decided to try to make you play the game again; I want replayability to be driven by gameplay mechanics, not two interchangeable characters that I don't really care much about.
Doom, on the other hand, feels like a genuine 90s shooter experience. All the guns feel good, the level design is great, the story isn't butting in the way of the gameplay constantly... it's just good. The secrets actually are fun to collect. I want to play the game over again to try different upgrade paths and play styles. Ultra-Nightmare represents a significant challenge that's going to take a lot of effort to beat. There's just a lot of game there, and it's solid stuff.
That said, since the multiplayer is warm asswater I'm not sure I can recommend anyone else paying full price for it since it'll be on sale in a few months time given Zenisoft's previous track record.
>>337983612
Terrible or niche.
Hmm that's a tough decision.
>>338000684
It's actually hell, you can turn off the glow but it's still an option to glory kill, and they drop more health when you're low on it, and the gameplay is not nearly as fast as full speed doom but still miles ahead of cod

no
>Is it actually "Hell"
yes
>How fast is the gameplay in singleplayer?
ok movement, combat is faster pace than in original dooms

only a few hps worth on glory kills or gibs, which is why the combat is faster because if you are low on health you better blow shit up

>>338000684
The melee "glory kills" are sped up a lot, and there's an upgrade to make them go even faster. I thought they'd suck watching someone else play it but having played it myself they're actually fine.
It's very, very much Hell.
Singleplayer is fast, but only if you play on Ultra-Violence or Nightmare - otherwise, you won't be challenged enough to move around and actually play the video game.
There's a fair amount of healing dropped, but it scales with difficulty, as does enemy damage. Even on Ultra-Violence, while it's rare I die unless I do something really stupid, I don't feel like I have too much of an overabundance of health pickups. On Nightmare the sheer fuckton of damage everything does and the meager amount of health and armor you get out of pickups means that you really can't fuck around too much, although the game does throw you bone with the amount of health pickups you get from glory kills if you're about to die.

Get educated. The multiplayer was made by the studio that makes the current Halo multiplayer. That's why it feels like shit and consolized and crap with progression systems and shitty 2 weapon limit and ultimates spreaded throughout the arena.
id touched nothing in the multiplayer, but Snapmap (Which John Carmack helped a little on) and the Singleplayer was all on id. They should of delayed the game and worked on the MP instead of the other studio working on it. But I guess their priorities was on the Singleplayer which is understandable.

Playing through Unreal Gold with the 227 patch. Why is the crosshair off? It's there on lower resolutions but playing it at 1920 made it extremely noticeable. On righthanded mode projectiles are too low and too the right. Same with lefthanded but opposite. The only way to fix it is to center the weapon. is there a way to fix this?
>>338005176
glorykills cannot be disabled, they still stagger
>>338005225
its not every encounter, and if you ever played original doom you'd know locking you into a large open arena keeps you from door-peeking.
glorykills give you iframes, regardless of difficulty, and the range at which you can execute them is generous, saves ammo, and I've used them to dodge explosions too many times to count. It's not unreasonable to prefer enemies actually fight back, you disgusting casual.
