It's a golden age of gimmicks.
A "Golden Age" in media would imply a period of time where the media came the closest to its ideal form and had the greatest volume of output that came close to this ideal. Now ask yourself what your vision of the definitive ideal video game is, and then ask yourself how close the average game today matches this ideal.

I would say that Uncharted 4 has officially heralded the Golden Age of gaming. Every game released after UC4 will try to reach that standard of magnificence and make gaming a lot better.

1st Gen (Odyssey, Pinball) - Fuck no, this gen sucked.
2nd Gen (Atari 2600/5200, Intellivision) - Fuck no, this gen raped the industry with a pool cue.
3rd Gen (NES, Commodore 64) - A good gen hampered by bullshit illegal price-fixing by Nintendo and a glut of games that were either Fantastic or Fantastically Awful. Some might call this the "Golden Age". Some are also clearly retarded.
4th Gen (SNES, Genesis, Gameboy) - A great generation of games. Still lots of ass out there, but an increasing maturity in both games and gamer alike near the end of the gen. made this gen looked back upon fondly marred by inane politics and Jack Thompson.
5th Gen (Playstation, Saturn, Gameboy Color) - Near-arcade quality ports became a reality. Less ass out there in general, and developers finally had enough tech to start experimenting...for good and for ill. A great gen. Unless you expected the Virtual Boy to succeed.
6th Gen (PS2, XBox, Dreamcast) - The Good: Lots of great games, beginning on online gaming for consoles. The Bad: Lots of ass. The Ugly: The demise of SEGA, N-Gage. All around a great, if sad, gen.
7th Gen (Wii(U), Xbox 360, PS3) - A crapshoot gen. What was good was FANTASTIC. What was bad was SPECTACULARLY bad. Also the near-demise of the classic JRPG sub-genre outside portable gaming (DS, PSP). A good gen in general marred by online (re)activism and hacking.
8th Gen (PS4 Xbox One, i/Android, WiiU) - Started out VERY slowly, possibly the slowest of ALL generations for quality gaming to start rolling out enmass. WiiU can't decide if it's modern or last gen and seems poised to die midway through like the Dreamcast & Saturn had, and has seen its brand actively harmed by anti-consumer/fan policy decisions. PC (which has been strong since Gen 2) sees stagnatic quality returns and Denuvo. As this is the current generation I cannot rate it fairly.

I can safely say that this is the worst year of videogames so far. DaS3 is the only good AAA game to come out and the only good indie game as an hour long rhythm game
