They also added three chapters with a new playable character which kind of sucks and fucks up the pacing for a few hours towards the middle of the game.

It is and it isn't. A lot of what was in 2 is there, but there's less weapons and they introduce a system called Steel on Bone which is almost vital to stay alive. It's like a perfect counter system that allows you to chain instant-kill enemies in a radius and the whole game is heavily structured around it from gaining health and ki back to getting good ranks at the end of a chapter.
The bosses are also easily the hardest in the franchise for all the wrong reasons. They will frequently do the exact same grab moves that can near 1 hit kill you up to 6 times in a row.
