Same deal with this sprite, a bit of cheating, but it's not the kind of cheating that was mentioned above. Do you actually know what is meant by "bending and stretching" of a sprite? The actual parts of the sprite are left at the exact same size they were, any "bending" or "stretching" here is drawn as a new frame, rather than pieces being squashed.

That's not bending or stretching, that's the character sprite being split up into separate parts.
You should have posted something from Yoshi's Island instead, since the sprite manipulation in that game is absolutely awful.

Earthbound was fairly-easy for a JRPG of its time.
Dungeon Crawlers will never be very popular because they require a lot from the player in terms of patience and RPG know-how.

I want it to be emotional and silly but otherwise I want it to be as little like Mother as possible and focus on having its own themes, setting, and quirks.
I personally think Undertale did a decent job of this. While it's obviously inspired by Mother/Cave Story/etc., it's still clearly it's own beast, with its own unique setting, conflict, themes, and even battle system.

Is it so hard to tell that most people's noses aren't oddly discolored from the rest of their face? The in-game art doesn't look too bad at least and the music is pretty gud. That said, the character sprites even in-game look awful and your character moves too slowly. It looks dreadfully boring.
