I played this last ladder season but the population is just too dead for me. The only people left playing are annoying jsp kiddies and the 4 tolerable people I managed to find through walk games. Everything else is just bots.

We are releasing 1.14c and resetting the ladder for Diablo II today. We will take the servers down at 1000 Pacific and expect the maintenance to last 3 hours. Patch notes:

Kinda. The economy is fucked thanks to dupes/bots so trading is almost nonexistent unless you're absurdly rich. The public games are overran with bots constantly spamming ads, they leave after five seconds but there's ton of them that join games. It's hard to find people who play legit and often enough to be friends with them.
It's still playable but nowhere near as fun for beginners as it used to be.

In some ways yeah. Most of the magic lied in the experience of playing and interacting with people online, which is pretty much laughable by today's standards.
The game play itself isn't that amazing. Using 1-3 simple skills, cookie cutter builds. Just farming the same 5-10 minute run for a chance at good items.

is there any viable build for necromancer besides the summons build?
i really dig him aesthetically wise but the play style where the summons do everything for you seems pretty boring to me.
Part of me wants to get back into it, but the other half knows how repetitive grinding the same things over and over again in the late game gets and I've done it so many times that the magic is probably gone

A necromancer that focuses on bone spear/spirit is great, but needs resources (e.g. enigma, preferably a full inventory of charms) to be good.
What are some fun builds for soloing hell on hardcore without good gear? Aside from sorceress and summonmancer.
