Sounds like it's making improper contact with the heatsink. Do a few trial runs with thermal paste. (apply it in a pea size, squish the heatsink on and then remove and see how well it spread.)

before this temperature increase occured, i had many blackscreen problems in the past when it hit a certain temp, but after the restart it didn't occur anymore which was strange.

i got the r9 290 since 2013 release.
i did try the r9 290x bios flash on the spare bios since you can simply switch the bios on the card 1 or 2.
after i found out it didn't work, i simply left it at 1, default bios and didn't touch it.
i did however mine a bunch of dogecoins in the beginning which might fucked the card up from the start, or atleast highly decreased the lifespan.
it went fine at 75°C for about 1-2 years and now it feels like my card is about to die.
i can probably make some good enough profit on ebay though for a half working card
