The original Doom has 3 episodes
Doom II is a direct sequel that takes place immediately after Doom. However, The Ultimate Doom, an updated release of the first game, features a 4th episode that takes place when Doom II is supposed to take place.
Doom 3 is a remake of the original Doom and retconned several plot points, such as the game taking place on Mars instead of the Martian moons and that the UAC opened portals to hell with alien technology left on Mars, not human technology.
DOOM (2016) is seemingly another remake of the original 1993 game, yet it it makes references to not just Doom and Doom II, but also Doom 3, which makes no sense considering Doom 3 was supposed to be a remake of the original Doom that retconned the 1993 game. The game also takes place on Mars, like Doom 3.
Seriously, there are few franchises this convoluted in the story department.

Ok, there are three Doom continuities right now
There is Wolfenstein RPG > Doom RPG > Doom II RPG
Then there is Doom 3 + Doom 3 xpac
Then there is this continuity, which is Doom > Doom 2 > Doom 64 > D44M
Basically, Doom 64 ended with the Doom Guy electing to stay in Hell for all eternity and kick demon ass
D44M opens up after a decent amount of time has passed because the Demons finally figured out a way to make Doom Guy take a nap, except mankind fucked that up royally.

Doom 4 actually takes into account the previous games.
You play as THE doom guy after locking himself in hell at the end of Doom 64 and eventually the demons imprisoned him because that was all they could do to stop his onslaught. Alt dimension UAC is hell worshipping and finds him, hell breaks loose in the facility, Doom guy wake sup and is utterly pissed people still dont tak eHell seriously, and thats where doom 4 picks up
Basically there is only one single hell, but it acts as a portal to multiple other dimensions, which is why Doomguy is back on mars again

Samuel Hayden mentions at the end that Doom Guy won't be satisfied until every last trace of Hell is wiped from existence. So Doom Guy was rippin and tearin through Hell for quite some time before they managed to trap him in a tomb by having some of their best warriors sit in there as bait, then sealed him in because he saw some big guys with big guts and couldn't resist.
Also, some of the scriptures in Hell talk about Doom Guy's rampage through Hell. He was pretty much nigh unstoppable because he was granted armor and weapons by "The Betrayer"

The Soul Cube is a possible reference, or also part of the continuity considering Doom 2016's UAC is essentially both a legit scientific company and a demonic cult. It got returned to Hell at the end of Doom 3 and this version of the UAC is actively trying to do shit with Hell.
They also establish the idea of Hell being one focal dimension that every other universe can link to, so that explains why they could recover the Soul Cube.
Give me shit for it or not, but I am amused by how much of a game whose story is largely throwaway can hold up.

Good question. One of the tablets near the end mention that the Betrayer's son is the Icon of Sin. There is a whole lot of lore I should dig through in the game's codex, but really unless you want to read all that, the game doesn't force you to or consider you will ever read it. But a lot of the demonic scriptures have some great stories of how the demons interpret Doom Guy's romp through Hell and beyond.

This is for you
The plot for Doom 1,2 and 3 are all connected. Ideally, each non-canon evidence of DOOM is actually an alternative universe of hell within the game's universe that DOOM guy has actually played in. Through spare files in the game and hidden documents, you realize you are actually given powers through god (A type of Immortality) and you are to smite and kill the demons.
The demons fear you at some point and you're just killing them because you're just pissed as hell at some point.
Then they seal you away in a coffin.
The events that happen before that though are actually timeline splits and dimensional "What if's" that actually CAN or HAS happened in the duration because it states that he's been immortal for thousands of years. The seals and tatoos on his armor and his being are actually demonic scriptures saying "DO NOT TOUCH" "STAY AWAY".
Hilariously enough, what this means is that all user created WAD's are actually game-canon and are actual adventures in multiple hell-universes that Doomguy and friends had. This also means that Chex Quest is actually Canon.
That and Wolfenstein is canonically speaking DOOMGUY's relative or ancestor or something.

Here's the DOOM 4 Marine lore.
*DEEP BREATH*
DOOM 4 Doomguy, or as he will now be henceforth called Nuguy belonged to an earthen dimension called Argent D'Nur. Argent is a mystical place from what little we know of it- it's primal hierarchies included beings of great power known as the Wraiths, which could control the very nature of reality. These wraiths were neutral forces- they were tempermental, and the cries of anger/sadness/annoyance known as the Wraith Cries were known to send entire populations into panic, as they were often associated with catastrophic events. If kept placid, the Wraiths were kind and helpful, and would provide energy for the population to siphon off of, creating Argent Energy to power their weapons and technology.
Hell is also established as a dimension of ever-changing size- it's modus operandi is three factors:
1) anyone who dies either goes to heaven or hell, where they are reborn
2) anything that dies in either is dead forever- it is unknown if they can continue existence.
3) Hell will try to breach into other dimensions/worlds and consume them in order to advance it's own lifeforms. hell is basically a bunch of space pirates.
Nuguy belongs to an order known as the Night Sentinels- their duty is to protect the Wraiths from all attacks, and this order can be considered an analogue to the Space Marine order from Warhammer 40k in their combination of technology, fanaticism and badassery. After repelling the advances of hell for however many years, one of the Night Sentinels grew weak- he contacted the demons, asking for the return of his son who died in a war. He helped the demons, and in turn they revived his son in"their form" i.e as a demon, and gained a foothold in Argent. From their, Hell absorbed the realm and killed the populace, sparing none.
Nuguy is the only one of his race left.

The demons had begun to freak the fuck out- Nuguy kills all of the demons sent at him. Even the god of hell, implied to be SATAN HIMSELF is sent at Nuguy and he fucking slaughters him without breaking a sweat. The demons then concoct a clever plan- lure Nuguy into a room, then drop a ceiling on him, knocking him out. Then, stuff him into a tomb and seal it for all eternity, hopefully. This ended the scourge of the Doom Slayer, but Hell was not without victims- the entirety of the realm had been nearly destroyed by his rampage alone, and the demons now regarded him as the greatest threat they have ever faced.
Nuguy then laid dormant for several years or whatever, and then the UAC of the DOOM 4 dimension dug him up and found out who he was. Olivia Pierce, a cultist and chief of research tried really hard to get rid of him, while Samuel Hayden, CEO of the company and a badass robot man kept him around under lockdown, knowing that Nuguy should be kept as a backup in case the demons invade their dimension.
The DOOM 4 dimension Earth is suffering from an energy crisis, and the UAC is using the leftover Argent energy from Nuguy's homeworld to power their shit. This explains why Nuguy breaks all of the equipment relating to Argent energy he can find- it is a violation of his duty as a Night Sentinel, and this makes him very, very mad.
Is Nuguy the DOOM 1/2 marine? It really depends- many of his actions harken back to DOOM 1 and 2, and their are several murals depicting his actions that represent DOOM 1 and 2 scenes.
TL;DR: Nuguy is a badass Warhammer 40k-esque Space marine from an alternate dimension who was so gifted in the art of killing motherfuckers that he's been blessed by god himself AND wears armor literally forged in the fires of Hell, and seeks vengeance upon the demons of Hell for the destruction of his Homeworld.

Yes, the PS1 port is the one I played the most since I didn't have a computer when I was a kid. Probably have the copy lying around somewhere, but I can't be bothered to look. Played Doom 64 using the EX port recently and it was really damn good. Loved the light puzzle elements, although things like the level 13 puzzle can go fuck themselves, you know the one. In the current map I'm working on I got rid off all item drops from glory kills, damage numbers (except bosses, they have health bars because I like naming them).
HUD elements include play time, par time, and a secrets counter. I scripted out a way to have weapon mods as pickups and even a janky hacked version of doing my own lighting in a room.
While not having a true brushed-based editor sucks, SnapMap is way better than I initially thought it was.

I actually was pleasantly surprised with how this new doom turned out. It was very fun and added a pretty cool story connecting the others. I choose to leave doom 3 out because it's irrelevant to me and I prefer the original story not the rebooted one. Ending was kinda stupid since basically Hayden is part villain now in a way and they'll probably turn the next one into some gay shit since he can't keep his hands of that stupid Argent energy but whatever. Just 100% the game and got 6 more achievements to grab.

First, the enemies design looks shit and almost made me feel I played a Gears of War.
Then, all this edgy shit about how DOOM SLAYER (lol) is so badass and wants only to kill and so and he is a chosen one or something like that.
It also makes me feel I'm playing more Serious Sam than Doom when all I see is rooms where enemies spawn out of nowere all the time. This of course happens in the originals but is not as common.
