Allows for much more interesting tactics.
You can use enemy numbers against them by placing yourself so they block each others line of fire. You can make people with explosives reluctant to fire by placing yourself right next to their allies.
Of course this requires a functioning community, which you rarely see if the game is just centered around random match making.

I like games where friendly fire are off by default because it forces me to get creative with the ways I teamkill.

If it can be abused by shitters in your team who kill team mates on purpose, measures should be added to force them out of the team, or at least make it public so that they can be avoided in the future.
It's interesting how friendly fire is becoming more and more rare, though. Blizzard is a great way to see the progression:
