Should I buy a second hand PS3 and play through that generation? I more or less missed out on it due to life getting in the way and have a lot of free time and not that much money.

You generally copy them onto the internal hard drive.
You probably won't find one listed on the internet as being modded; look for a console on 3.55 firmware or below if you want to pirate, from there it's a one click install to mod it.
