If you have an Intel CPU you can use the unutilized integrated graphics to record, this is called quicksync.
Nvidia has shadow play and AMD has Plays.tv.
Both Nvidia's AMD's and Intel's integrated recording functions can be used in OBS.

The bottleneck isn't the drive, it's how you're encoding the footage.
If your CPU is doing the work, it can lose your frames per second.
Shadowplay uses a built-in h.264 encoder on your video card to do the work, which minimizes performance impact.

Yes, it records on CPU and doesn't compress shit so unless you have a separate disk with large sequential write rate it will bottleneck your system pretty bad. On the other hand, fraps will record literally anything and everything.
