Its also the first Doom game that doesn't support Linux. Which means its also the first Doom game I won't buy. If its not on Linux, and the source code isn't opened after a few years the kind of long term support that the old games got will be impossible. Which means in order to run it ten years from now you'll have to track down an old system with an old version of Windows while Doom 3 will still be getting updates and will be playable on anything.
>>337792539

Witcher 3 hasn't been released for Linux yet. Supposedly they were waiting for Vulkan to be stable which only happened about a month and a half ago and it takes time to support new technology in a game engine. If future games are using Vulkan out of the box porting will become much faster and easier.
Witcher 2 runs pretty well on OpenGL though for a tool assisted port.

I like it a lot so far, also pretty impressive what they did with the console releases. Obviously the PC version was going to be the best but it's still cool that they targeted 60fps on console and included the ability to disable chromeab, motion blur, and change the FOV. You never see that shit on consoles.
>>337794738
Ragdolls literally make gameplay better. It's far more enjoyable to shoot enemies with physics.

Truly a great FPS that totally caters to the old audience with glory finishers, wave based combat and fart guitar soundtrack
>>337794687
The sad thing about the new Doom though is that it requires OpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan and Linux drivers for those are both available. This isn't a game that's being held back by needing a costly port from single-platform solutions to multi-platform code, its just being held back by Zenimax upper management.
There were far fewer than a million Linux gamers back when Doom 3 was released. How does it make sense to support the platform in its infancy but not now when its starting to come of age and Microsoft is shitting the bed?

Between .8 and 1.2% of a user base of 150 million is not 'no one'. Use of Linux as a gaming platform has been growing at about the same pace at Steam itself for the last few years and demographically Linux users are one of the prime markets for classic FPS games, one of the reasons why all Id and Epic both supported Linux back in the 90s. That's why I'll be playing the new UT instead of the new Doom.

Yep, even Mac is more relevant as a gaming platform than linux, and lol mac
Masterpiece? no. However it's a step in the right direction. In the sea of generic as fuck FPS that we've had for the past 10 years this dared to be old school, or close to it and it did something other old school games like Serious Sam couldn't do: get the usual FPS fanbases to like it.
DOOM is being praised to hell and back in communities despite it being "different" and for that it deserves respect. It may not be the long awaited revival of DOOM some people wanted, but it's better than DOOM 3 and could very well be the starting point for the return of older style shooters.

You misunderstand, that is Linux gamers as that is from Steam. The number has fluctuated between .8% and 1.2% since it launched. In that Time Steam has grown from about 75 million users to 150 million users meaning that even by conservative estimates there are now more than a million strictly desktop Linux PC gamers. Those numbers do not include people who dual boot and play games on Windows, or who use a virtual machine for gaming, or who use Wine, or who use SteamOS (as big picture users are not included in the Steam survey currently).
For a game that already uses cross-platform solutions the cost of a port would be more than made up for by the size of the market.

MacOS's problem is that its effectively abandonware much like desktop Windows. They would rather spend their money on mobile. The latest version of OS X only supports OpenGL 4.1, even the open source AMD drivers now support OpenGL 4.3 and could fully support 4.5 in a few months if the pace of development continues.
Long term Linux is the only valid option for PC gaming.

It's weird because I have a friend who's also pushing a GTX 780 and he's getting an almost constant 60 on Ultra with a couple settings turned down.
I tried clearing cache, it helped, a little, other than that I'm open to suggestion.
>>337797439
It's ok but it's nowhere near the masterpiece or savior of fps people make it out to be.

>>337795035
You know, believe it or not there exist on this earth gamers who aren't shoving graphics cards up their asses day in and day out. Graphics quality isn't the be-all end-all of a game, and the new Doom's ability to look as good as it does and maintain a solid 60 frames per second while there are tons of actors onscreen makes it impressive in my book. It plays well, and if you weren't a faggot, you'd address that instead of
>muh graphics
P.S., before you start on the "lol ur a fanboy" train, I'm not under the impression that this game is perfect. There are definitely flaws, most of the guns could use a whole lot more punch and the level design gets pretty uninspired near the end with fucktons of arenas and all that, but it's still several miles out of the standard mainstream shooter's league.
>>337797526
Right it was DX11. The tools that most companies use to port games to Linux currently works best with DX9->OpenGL 3.3, DX11->OpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan is less mature and provides less consistent results in terms of performance. CDPR is supposedly working on native Vulkan support themselves for an enhanced upgrade and port.
>>337797401
It's a fun game that pride itself on what it isnt.
It's a corridor shooter through and through with really, really fun set pieces and weapons although there is a 4 weapon limit and you must bring your default assault rifle along so it is a 3 weap limit. Enemy variety is as poor as any modern shooter: melee guys and shotgun guys who rush you and rifle guys who hang back. sometimes there is a section filled with snipers and guys who hide behind cover.
>>337793861
Shadow warrior is better than both
>>337797538

>>337794497
Vulcan is still inherently longer to develop for than opengl because it's the the closest to machine you can get and your resources aren't spent converting code to machine language. That being said we're on the verge of getting rid of archaic platforms like Dx and open gl for more efficient ways as we see with Vulcan and metal so that's exciting
>>337797763
anon, what happened in your life that gets you so triggered by the phrase "texture quality"?
were you bullied by a gang nvidia devs?
Imo it's called Doom but it's more like an upgraded Quake 2.
Same kind of "go there press that button" plot, similar level design (less backtracking but still nonlinear).
It's more about tougher enemies with fixed attack patterns and not about their numbers.
And overall dynamics/movement is also similar to Quake 2.

I wouldn't call the new Doom a "Masterpiece", but I like it nontheless. It's nice change of pace that breaks away from most other shooters, very gratuitous (in the good way) and an emphasis on having fun without trying to appear as anything other than what it is, which is an incredibly enjoyable power trip.
I also like the multiplayer. Fast paced, run-and-gun. If I had to draw a comparison, it'd be like if TF2 and Halo had a baby.

Shadow warrior also had the exploding stuff problem to the point where I would just clear all the exploding stuff in an area before I spawn enemies. Luckily it felt fast and fun. I hope they won't fuck up SW2.

As someone who worked with source engine a lot, I can tell you that HL2 AI is not shit, but is never really used in it's full potential. It can think as a squad, hide behind small cover and so on, however some reason that code is never used in base game. And the only time AI uses any squad tactics is when you defend alyx in the segment where she gets captured.

The game feels like a good first game that would make a great sequel, but we all know no sequel will ever come with ids 10 year dev times. I mena the mechanical design si here, but the lack of content and proper use of those design decisions makes it ultimately a forgettable game.

If you're playing a Doom game looking for a meaningful story, you're barking up the wrong tree. It's a series principally about a guy who's so strong the demons of hell were so scared of him they collapsed a temple on top of him just to put him to sleep.

for me

people give the multi shit but its at lest above average even if still nothing good
snap map is just a waste of time, the tools might be good but the limitations of small number asset and option of what you cna do make the whole this pointless
the game is hard to rate, its not especially good, but its not bad, somewhre between 6 and 8 i guess, it really varies, in short burst uits good but the repetitive nature of level and enemy design makes it a hard game to enjoy for longer

The irony of you describing the series by the newest entry while trying to teach me whats it about blows my fucking mind.
Regardless, the story is already in the game, so no reason to not make it great.
The chick should get more exposition monologues, dosnt need to stop you in your tracks, she could just talk over some intercom while you walk around. Also game starting at start of the invasion not after it would allow her to show up somewhere in the background more and allow you to see the results of her actions.
And while during the gamepaly cinematics are a bich of intrusion, after the agem ens no reason they couldnt have a 10 minute long autro and epilogue to warp everything up instead leaving everything open.
Fcuking 30 second cinematic of a talking heads is not what i would call a satisfactionary ending to any game, even one with no story.

Tell that to Wolfenstein New Order.
An emotional story about fucking future nazis on the moon and magical jew technology full of dry dark humor at every step. Yet still menages to pull those heart strings and give a satisfactions ending and wrap up well.
Sure it had more of a story focus, but it proves that with a bit of effort you can work with anything.
Tekla a story side character in it that has 2 short interaction scenes menages to leave more of an impression that the villain in doom you spend chasing the entire fucking game that gets like fucking 30 hologram talking moments that are wasted on shit all.

>>337803176
There are shills in a lot of games, mostly Gearbox ones because it's CONFIRMED, but this DOOM is pretty good and fun, campaign at least.
It's not a masterpiece because you see the potential and what they tried, but after the first half, you can see they got tired of making the labyrinthine maps and kinda just started to just push forward development. It's a good game, and so close to be a classic or a masterpiece, but not quite.
DLC or expansions might cut it, but highly unlikely.
MP is a mess. It just pairs you up with your region, and if you don't live in the US or certain parts of Yurop you just don't find matches. The game has this mouse smoothing that fucks up the controls in MP. It's truly a mess right now.
Snapmap is kinda... barebones right now? there's something to be done there but it's just so so basic it's boring.
>>337803176

id say this has been long coming and mightve happened even without Doom 4. Doom 4 just managed to sort of merge old and new in a way that might get the new crowd to get interested in the old.
something like Far Cry Blood Dragon was another step in the right direction. it dared to not have stamina, and to have fun with it's own premise.
Strafe is another, it's influenced by shit like Quake and Doom, and therefore is like an homage to fast paced shooters.
much like arcade racers are making a comeback, oldschool shooters are starting to claw their way out of the grave as well, Doom 4 is just a happy coincidence where id/bethesda decided to keep the game more oldschool.

Hit with argent energy fused their skull together and they had to drill to the brain.
Or some sort of cyclops mutation if you wear glasses. And given UAC was a nerd cult...they probably wore glasses
>>337793425
Trust me, it picks up in Hell and the Argent Tower. Gets a bit better before that, too.
>>337809735
I bought it for my friend since I missed his birthday, it's a disk but You still have to connect to steam to get the updates.
Seriously, how many years have passed since the events of the first game? It's strange that everything about doomguy has been forgotten and out current technology is called ancient.
>>337809941
>>337809735
After you get the update you should be able to play it offline.
>>337809941

Adapt or die PC cuck cause those days have moved on.
You wonder why no one cares about PC gaming this day and age?
Cause you losers are so nostalgic over the past and you reject the future.

It's definitely a fun game, but I've had some issues.

>>337810014
Assuming this new UAC is alternative dimension and doomguy is in fact the same doomguy from D1/D2/final/D64 who choose to stay in hell....I don't know
Maybe hell is a timeless void. You stay relatively the same age as you entered.
Game says eons but that just biblical theatrics. He easily recognize human tenchology shit and can read English.

What i can atleast partly gather is that Hell and it's flow of time is relatively a lot slower then the "realm" that Mars (and Earth) occupies.
Would kind of explain why the Demons talk of Aeons, and it makes the whole setup even funnier. There is just no easy way of knowing just how long of a time Doom guy actually tore shit up in Hell, all the talk in the Tablet atleast makes it sound like it's ancient legend.

Were you being sarcastic? Sounds like a loop of the ending of every modern warfare game trailer or a 10 second loop of BF3 soundtrack.

>>337824316
Update your driver?
>>337824660
Yup
It actually made it considerably worse. Before updating it was just dropping a lot of frames, but was stead maybe 75% of the time.
This is gonna sound weird, but I really like the story, as simplistic as it might be. It's pretty much how you would expect an angel of death to react if it woke up in the middle of a demonic invasion on Mars caused by irresponsible tampering by humans. AKA "Fuck everything, and especially your shit."
Doom guy doesn't give a shit about trying to protect vital resources, about collaborating, about the overall goal of the experiments there. All he cares about is that there are demons around, he has to kill them and he's really, REALLY fucking mad at whoever's responsible for this and doesn't give a fuck about them.
>>337806978

>>337819449
doom is known for not having reloading. It works because the game is fast paced and theres no need for it.
The fact that a modern game actually decided to have no reloading is a big deal because it shows some kind of effort to be faithful to the original.

Please don't hurt me (easy)
Hurt me plenty (normal)
Ultra-violence (hard)
Nightmare (very hard)
Ultra-Nightmare (Basically the same as nightmare but with added perma-death)
The length of the game depends on a mixture of your skill level and what difficulty you play on. Most people that have beaten it did it within 10-13 hours, plus some of the maps are fairly open and can be explored for hidden collectibles and upgrades.
>>337828786
They just need to get people talking about it. I've seen so many anons buying games they don't expect to be good just to see how bad they are or buying out of sheer spite because somebody else doesn't want them to. It's mind boggling.
A game nobody's heard of never gets that treatment. It doesn't matter what people think of the game. As long as somebody cares, it'll generate sales.

>>337829440
Don't take my word for it, since I actually enjoy it, but the multiplayer's kinda okay.

I just finished the campaign yesterday, i thoroughly enjoyed the game. I thought it was easy at first, but the difficulty ramps up rather quickly. Thank god for the rune that makes enemies drop armor when you glory kill them, sure saved my ass a few times. All in all a pretty solid game, but by no means will it be GOTY for me. The MP is fairly fun if playing with friends, but alone its pretty boring.

I know that astroturfing is real.
What I'm really getting at is there's not a lot of reason for them to do it here, because there's too much noise and opposition.
Besides, while it is easier to post here because there lack of registration, the message would be more well received in pretty much every other gaming forum. Whatever they post here well always be met with negativity.

>>337830791
This.
This place is too big of a negative shithole in order to market games. Every opinion is met with an opposing one since everyone enjoys to argue. It'd be better to avoid viral marketing here just because every game is made out to be shit. The less a game is talked about the better.
>>337793063

I'm not that guy. But I've restarted half life 2 about half a dozen times and I just can't stay interested. I get bored as fuck and move on.
>>337830791
Advertizement doesn't need a warm reception. Haven't you seen garish obstructive ads and irritating commercials that play over and over and over? It doesn't matter if people hate them as along as they're aware of the product. Hell, it hurts brand image less shitting up message boards because there's always plausible deniability.
And for reasons yet unknown, people browse 4chan. A lot of people. It would make less sense if they didn't market here.
Wasn't Andromeda confimed when he gave out free keys? There's a precedent.
>>337820408
Reloading doesn't have to break the action. It's not like the gun needs to be disassembled and reassembled before firing again, just make the reload animations quick.
It's nice to have a means of balancing guns outside damage per shot and rate of fire. Increased/decreased magazine capacity is a great way of making a gun fast and powerful but preventing it from being Easy Mode: The Weapon.
Especially for Doom, since you can carry like 9 guns AND you have useful melee weapons. Reloading gives you a good reason to switch weapons often mid-fight, and to take advantage of your movement abilities to manage space while you have to reload, rather than it just being "jump and circle strafe, spray and pray"
>>337829762

>>337832560
Reloading is a way of forcing the player to manage resources mid-fight without making the game devolve into Hunt For The Ammo Crate
It's annoying if the game drastically slows down the player when he's in the reload animation, but as long as he retains full movement speed it gives the player cause to use it, and makes the game about balancing defense/evasiveness with offense rather than just sheer offense
Wolfenstein New Order and Old Blood both better.
Don't get me wrong though, DOOM is a good time, but nowhere near in comparison in the quality of the new Wolfenstein games.
>>337803176
