I pugged every raid in WotLK because I was just sick of every single guild interaction after playing through tbc and vanilla. My friend and roommate at the time played with me, we were both tanks. I was a paladin and also had a solid holy set over time and he was a warrior who also had a priest we could use if needed. We would typically just tank however and find everything else we needed.
At first it was rough, but we managed to clear normal 25 naxx and 25 ulduar. It was once we started doing heroic modes in ulduar that the main raiding guild in the server started joining our runs, on their alts. Our runs became about 10-15 alts from 2 different guilds, myself and my friend and the rest filled in from friends lists. We went on to clear all heroic ulduar, toc and icc. Even doing the mount achievements, which we would sell carrys for from time to time. All the items were done strictly through ML by me, but allowed fair rolls for people who could use the item. It worked out really well. Main spec > off spec strictly enforced. What you came as is what your ms was, no exceptions. The best part about these pugs was that we got to the point where more people wanted in than I had slots for, which made it so if anyone acted like a fucking retard I'd have them replaced in less than 5 minutes.

Back when Vanilla was released, it was a whole new world for people to experience; many people were a lot younger (a 24 year old now would have been twelve when the game released) and look on those times with nostalgia for "the better times".
Not only that, but for many it was an escape. From family, parents, relationships, school, work, whatever. Most people got together in a guild of like-minded people and had a good time venting and sharing and just having a fun experience with others.
So when people say "the good times" of Vanilla WoW, they aren't always talking about the game itself; a lot of times they're referring to their circumstances in life, whether they realize they're doing it or not.
I imagine a lot of the people lobbying for Vanilla servers fit this description.
But time marches on, and you either get left behind or you suck it up and fucking move on.

It was more than that though, there was a very unique "WoW moment" in the zeitgeist and pop culture.
There were jock football players at my high school that used to talk to me about WoW.
I met my first girlfriend because we both played WoW.
There was just this one moment in time when something that is usually a very niche nerd experience was suddenly experienced by everybody.

The threat-meter was for dual-tanks. There were boss-fights where you had to rotate tanks, and I had to make sure to not pull threat. I did a lot of damage/threat at the time as a tank and would pull from off-tanks easily if I didn't manage my shit.
