The reason there is a lot of fervor for Overwatch is because of the usual hype that precedes a release. Hype itself is a game people play, marketers try to generate it, consumers try to live in it, and the whole thing climaxes with the release. Post-release is another game where marketers try to maintain hype, while consumers pretend they were never that interested in the first place, until the next big game comes out and the whole thing repeats itself.

Pretty sure 4chan still has a fair amount of traffic, so I don't necessarily think that it's impossible to actually be targeted by some sort of marketing. But in any case, the obsession about about shills on /v/ is way over the top and I'm absolutely convinced that people are "trolling" by pretending to be (bad and obvious) marketers.
In any case, you should not make purchasing decision based on /v/'s opinion of a game and that goes especially in the case of Overwatch, since the game had an extensive period where you could play and form your opinion by yourself. I'm not sure how effective marketing can be when everyone can just try the full product without any limitations. They can't exactly make out the game to be something it isn't when any person with interest in it has already played it, can they?
I didn't much care about it before the beta since it looked kind of generic and I was afraid the ASSFAGGOTS influence would hit it hard, but after playing my opinion changed considerably. I don't think I've had this much fun in a modern shooter since TF2 came out, way before it went F2P.
Anyway, you shouldn't buy games before you tried them, you cannot accurately evaluate a game when you don't interact with it. If that's not an option, because there's no free version or demo and it can't be pirated or played from a friend, just wait until it's cheap as fuck or buy from somewhere that offers refunds.

Well the point of the marketing is to convince you that it is actually a good game and that you want to buy it. They're making a lot of promises about upcoming content, but based on how they handled HotS, SC2, Diablo 3, and the rest of their IP, I actually wouldn't expect them to do much with Overwatch once they have your money.
Blizzard has gotten to be a very marketing-oriented company. I strongly suspect their marketing teams are bloating every year, and that most of the development starts in marketing's board room. Just look at this "play of the game" crap and the "ultimates". It's all flashy bullshit to put into the ads and to show off on Youtube or in webms. Except the "play of the game" thing doesn't work in terms of real design and any programmer likely could have warned you that. Marketing doesn't know what will and will not work in terms of development - they just know what they can sell.

In a nutshell. Blizzard can promise all it wants, but you know why they do that "You think you want this but you don't" schtick, right? It's because they likely aren't providing enough funding to their actual programmers and developers. They don't have real resources there to fix the games or improve them, so you have to settle for mediocrity. The legal team took down the private servers, but the dev team doesn't have the ability to replace what got taken down.
Nor will they ever balance any of their games in a way that makes them fun to play. They can't. All they can do today is market, and once you bought the game that's all you're getting.

I actually don't see where the idea that Blizzard don't support their games is coming from. Pretty much every game from D2 onward still has an online community playing. IIRC W3 got a new patch a few months ago and I think D2 got one this year too, how many companies patch decade-old games, not to mention still have online services up and running? There are no microtransactions in those games and sales have surely dried up by now, yet servers are up and running.
Don't know much about SC2, though I'm pretty sure it's still getting patched, but D3 is getting new patches and new content (areas, tilesets, monsters, items) just about every 3 months now.
They definitely put out some shit I couldn't care less about, like HotS or Hearthstone with its card packs or modern WoW, but it seems like they're still paying attention to their games that people are still playing at least.

Sure, they do easy stuff, like small tweaks to unit stats or whatever, but SC2 and Diablo 3 both needed major overhauls to the way they worked. SC2 got rushed out the door and who knows what went wrong with Diablo 3. I suspect in both cases the issue was that marketers were running the whole show and could care less how well the games actually played as long as they could fake some gameplay videos and make people think things would be better than they were.
Now SC2 has had two expansions and it basically hasn't advanced at all. It still has all the same problems it started with and never got its shit together. Diablo 3 is the same way. An expansion came out but it didn't really fix anything. Balance discussions are always, "You think you want this, but you don't".
Whatever they're doing, it seems like it's low-hanging fruit and not the stuff any of the players are really seeking.

I never played SC2 that much, most I played was in the WoL days and I never got above the Gold/Plat shitter level. The game seemed to work fine to me but it didn't really grab my attention to keep me playing in the long run, but then again a few games in general ever managed that. I don't know about balance, I was always too shit at the game to feel that I can complain about balance when every single problem I might've had could've been solved 100% by being better at the game.
D3 was boring, unsatisfying shit at launch. The pure, core gameplay was good (fast, responsive, wasn't clunky, etc.) but the itemization was crap due to the AH. Once they removed that and especially after RoS I really enjoyed it. It most certainly does not come anywhere near the atmosphere D1 and D2 had and in some areas gets outdone by other hack'n'slash RPGs on the market, in the end though I still like it the most because how well it's actual gameplay works, everything else seems sluggish or clunky. I don't know what issues you have with D3, mine was the fact that item drops were tailored around the AH and they fixed that once they removed it. Nowadays the game's problem for me is how grindy GR pushing is and how only certain classes/builds are viable for that, but I've put a lot of time into it and if I'm to be honest I have to admit that I'm pretty much done with it anyway, unless they put out another expansion or something.

There's actually a pretty huge skill gap. IDK where this myth came from. Aim assist is pretty much the only thing that makes aiming while moving possible with a joystick, that's just the way it is. The guys who still know the game better than the other guys are going to win. Just like how in Halo 3, a 50 was always going to wreck lower ranks. You don't need twitch aiming w/ mouse for there to be a skill gap, aim is just one factor of many. And even with aim assist (which doesn't do what PC fats think it does), it's perfectly possible to be a shitty shot.

Levels don't do anything gameplay-wise. There are no boosts for anything at all, the loot boxes only contain skins and other cosmetics (sprays, voice lines, animations/stances, etc.). Up until this point you could not buy anything for cash, but supposedly you will be able to buy loot boxes with cosmetics once the game launches. Not everyone will care about this, but it's a serious problem for anyone hoping to take the game seriously as an Arena FPS. Luckily, the game is a moba with gunplay on the side. Worst of all, the 20-tick issue is purely because blizzard is too cheap to shell out for 60-tick servers. Since enemies also see this 'delay' in the tickrate, they will be able to kill you when you've already made it around a corner and other ridiculous situations. This is REALLY bad for a 'competitive' game.
>3. Designed with consoles in mind, maximum 104 FoV
There's nothing wrong with some couch gaymin', unless it jeopardizes the integrity of your game. The severely limited field of vision (max = 104 horizontal, which is only 72 vertical) is there strictly as a balancing factor, because console gamers often use much lower field of vision. If you've ever played quake, you understand how absolutely essential (and how nice it feels) to crank up your h-fov to 120 and beyond.
>4. blizzard crumbles to peer pressure
They won't listen to the professional scene exclusively, or maybe at all, when it comes to major balance changes. More likely than not, they will cater to the bottom 95% of players and end up making balance decisions based on what shit players whine about. Blizzard is a corporation, they want money above all. Happy casual players = more skins are purchased. The comp scene will be nothing more than a publicity stunt.
