Modern games
>update console firmware
>update game with 25 gigabytes of data
>a quarter of the game removed and sold as microtransactions

Retro games
>plug and play, forever as you remember them

So why aren't you a retro gamer instead? Modern games are trash
>>
I already played old games when they came out
>>
>>337674324

fucking neo-/v/ermin millenials. I bet you were born in '98 too and pretend you've played everything for that mad gaymer credz
>>

>tfw born in 1981 and had every major console since the nes within a year of them coming out and always had good pcs since the mid 90s.
>>
>>337674536
dunno, depends what genre and console you're interested in. Just get retroarch and boom, you have all the emulators you need in one except ps2. Snes and genesis have a lot of great games
>>
>>337674703

Im not new to emulating and need some suggestions.
>>
>>337675025
the libraries are just so vast I have no idea how to present any entry level games

you could try using the /v/ wiki
http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki//v/%27s_Recommended_Games_Wiki

scroll down for retro consoles. Try to stick to nintendo and sega
>>
>>337675025

Oh and for pure awesomeness, golden axe and metal slug series are my favorites, take that however you like if you want to try something

>>

>>337675958

Ok thank you people. I like beat em ups so I will check out that category first.
>>
Pretty much no point to not play on PC these days when consoles are just shittier PCs with budget parts. Consoles peaked with PS2.
>>
>>337676289
oh and get retroarch
It's piss easy to get up and running (basically just extract and play), but as a starter you should try and check out guides

Retro games
>plug into hd tv
>wow this looks like shit
>plug into crt
>wow this is blurry as fuck
>need to get s-video or RGB cables? 30 bucks
>want to play a specific game from your childhood? 20-150 bucks because dumb resellers and dumb millenials paying that much
>>
>>337676568
Just emulate...
>>
>>337675849
>Try to stick to nintendo and sega
There's more to games than just these two faggot.
>>
One quick question.
Are there any beat em up with diablo loot system and rpg elements for the personal computer? (emulation?)
>>
CRT monitor > CRT tv
fite me
>>
>>337676568

> CRT - $Free if you check craigslist for old Sony FlatCRTs that weigh 50+ pounds
> Console - $20 to $50
> S-Video Cables - $20 at most
> RGB / SCART Cables - $40+ haha you got me there
> Kr1kz flashcart with SD card support - $80 to $150

so for maybe $250 you can play every SNES game on a great screen with great color

Most old CRTs had pretty in-depth controls for everything that affects the picture. An NES can look pretty alright without any modding or any of that other business.
But yeah auction sites jack up the price on carts, but the flash carts that exist make it more viable.
>>
>So why aren't you a retro gamer instead? Modern games are trash

Because each one costs a fortune to buy and requires specialized CRT monitors and equipment just to play without retarded filters or lag.
>>
>>337678784
But that would mean I have all the shovelware too ya dunce
>>
>>337674275
I miss /vr/ threads on /v/. Retro game gauntlet threads were fun as shit.
>>
>>337678832
Or you could just get a CRT monitor and emulators.
>muh accuracy
>muh image must be blurry as fuck cuz that's waht teh devz intended
>>
>>337677394
Don't forget to switch on those filters for HD graphics bro!

There are PCucks who unironically play with the filters on
>>
>>337678832

What? You can use any regular CRT.

>specialized equipment
Like hands? Wall outlets?
I'm really not sure what you're saying anymore.

This is my major gripe with Sm4sh

Melee:
>turn on GC
>mash start
>30-60 sec later game is starting

Sm4sh:
>turn on wii u gamepad, hit sm4sh from quick start menu
>wait 2-3 min
>finally see intro video, mash through it
>wait 1-2 min
>finally get to main screen

Load times are abysmally slow

>forever as you remember them
literally nothing is as you supposedly remember them. The majority of games you played as a child do not hold up to the expectations you have when you're an adult and are certainly not as good as you remember. Retro games are fine but you've got to take off the nostalgia goggles off.

Funny enough I got myself Snes and ps2 just month ago. I definetly got much more fun replaying games and getting ones I missed out than buying and getting dissapointed with this gen games.
>>
>>337679605
Maybe Because the 4th, 5th and 6th gen were the golden ages of gaming
>>
Yeah no kidding. On top of that modern games typically have way too many prompts, warnings and menus to go through.

>Cancel
>Are you sure you want to cancel?

Literally has never been helpful to me.

And what about those godawful logos every time I start the damn game? Is this some kind of legal obligation? Why can't I skip them?

Modern console gaming is a fucking hassle. I booted up Outrun 2 on my OG Xbox yesterday and I got to play without sitting through endless loading screens, navigating through endless menus, waiting for logos or warnings to appear and pass every fucking time I start the game. There wasn't a fucking tutorial or cutscene either. For god's sake. Fuck Sony and Microsoft.

Probably because it was on a cart, not from a disk.

Interesting read here: http://www.techinsider.io/nintendo-nx-may-use-game-cartridges-2016-5

Look past the fuck-tarted introduction where the author implies that people never heard of a 64, but its an interesting point over all - if the read times for modern cartridges are higher than disks, there's a chance cartridges will return.

Also that there is less content to load - not game content but lower res textures and graphics, not nearly as what the wii u version is having to load

>>337679825
I still don't know if it's supposed to be a handheld or what, but if it's a console, they should really just use blu-ray.
>>
>Modern games
>Buy console
>Hope because of all the technical parts that it works, which it normally does
>Have to create and sign in not just an account for the console, but for certain games as well
>Have to connect to internet, and needed for many applications / features
>Have to do firmware updates for console which rarely add anything, and only exist to implement more drm / anti hacking
>Pop in a game disc, which always works, even now with blu ray technology and anti scratching even bought from the worst owner it's still likely to work perfectly
>Have to wait as the entire game installs
>Most games are 25-50gb in size, taking 10-20minutes sometimes to fully install
>Game then needs to update, literally every game needs an update, which could be 1-10gb taking as short as a minute, to an hour or more depending on connection speed
>Once all is done, hope you can access most of the game without needing DLC / microtransactions, or a constant internet connection

>Pros to modern games: Patches that can fix problems
>Cons to this mindset: Why qa games for additional months making sure there is no bugs when you can just release it sooner and fix bugs pre and post launch?
>Additional cons to modern games: All that DLC you buy, which sometimes can cost the same or exceed the base games price is not installed on the disc, rather locked to the HDD / account, which can only be activated simultaneously so many times, and if PSN goes down someday you will have to rely on keeping your active PS4s alive. Other digital content can simply be removed outright, like PT demo, or games like Scott Pilgrim.

>Retro games
>Plug in the hardware
>Pop in the software
>Hope that both still work due to age and condition, though it's possible with many consoles to actually fix things like broken capacitors, or disc drives.

There are still SOME amazing games that come out, but they've really killed the simplicity of it all.

Retro gamers tend to be terribly autistic and completely stuck in the past.

They don't even try other retro games, only the games they grew up with.

But yws, I play games from every era. Just picked up an ever drive 64, both to play Japanese games accurately (contrary to the memers on here N64 emulation is a considerable clusterfuck) and make multiplayer portability easier.

Wish modern consoles put more effort into local multi.

>>337680136
Any genre you're really into?
>>
>>337680104
It's easier to use Steam these days, honestly.

At least with Steam once you buy the game and click "download now" it will immediately start grabbing the most recent patched version, you don't have to install and THEN update.
>>
>>337680437
>paying for things you dont own

nah
>>
>>337680437
I agree, outside of the DRM attached to it, and account system Steam is the easiest and simplest modern gaming. It's nice it goes ahead and downloads everything, having to do additional patches afterwards is retarded.
>>
>>337679731
not even him but lighten up.
sometimes i wish "epic" would be in style again
>>
>>337680437
Only exception is the "first launch" installations for runtimes
>>337680567
m8 if I'm paying half price and play the game in full for long enough, I don't give a shit that I don't formally own it.
