Anyone else likes it when the bullets fly out of the gun exhaust like pic related? It's even better when they don't just disappear. In MGS3 they even float about underwater.
Yeah in the first FEAR they bounced around on the ground and even made different sounds depending on what material they landed on.

A shell is (usually) non-constructive and can be made up of softer material.
The nomenclature has, like everything else, hovered around and changed with time but the modern uses usually places them in specific contexts.
'Shell', for example, is 99% of the time used to refer to the wholly named 'shotgun shells.' Or for ammo more often associated with shotguns (large dia shot-canisters are sometime called 'shells').
Brass and casings are more often than not interchangeable like you said but casings might refer to non-metallic cartridge bodies too. Unlike Brass who is better used to refer to only the metallic ones (in/correctly for non-brass casings too)
