I never bothered with the side-quests aside from getting all the masks.
Why even bother adding a bunch of extra equipment like this when the starter equipment good enough to get your through the game and the whole masks mechanics would obviously cause players to ignore even bothering getting the extra swords.

The game only truly saved when you played the Song of Time.
The effect was that if you fucked something up and wanted to save scum, your only option is to return to Day 1 (i.e. playing Song of Time and turning the console off did the same thing.
I liked that inconvenience because it added to the atmosphere and the concept of having to reset the world to get things right.
In 3D, the Song of Time doesn't save any more and all the Owl Statues provide a hard save. This is more convenient for handheld players but also means that you don't have to start from Day 1 when you make a mistake.

Nope. In the original, the statues were used for warping only. You could only save using the ocarina.
