SC2 failed because they split it into 3 games, killing the competitive scene after the HOTS hype faded.

WoW was kind of like the Darth Vader of MMOs. It rose in a time where MMOs were the hottest shit, it was almost religiously well-known in a short period of time, practically a household name by 2007. In the end it was seduced by evil, and due to its actions the genre was cast into darkness.

But it's true, the matchmaking system for 1v1 means you're always against people who are at your skill level. The harder you try the better they become. There is never a mountain top. People like to play competitive games, but they don't enjoy going full crazy every single match.
