They probably modified a pre-existing typeface to use one that is unique. Unless the font is generic for subtitles, always assume that.

I don't think their engine had any sort of font rendering programmed in. They, like every other developer at the time, created the font specifically for their game. Of course they could have based it on several things, but that's neither here nor there.
