The game is very open-minded. There is an entire dungeon about the scary world of "gravure" which was all covered up in America.

Combat is like a simple Diablo with a time-limit mini-game on the side where you need to kill creatures in order to get a resource and spend it on checkpoint to extend your time on the level (between other things)
I think what people complain the most is that you don't really use many skills in combat, you auto-attack 90% of the time. The fun aspect comes from costumizing your weapons and the order they are in. Each time you auto-attack you cycle through you 5 weapon combo. You can have up to 3 "5 weapon combos" equiped at once
There's magic damage, blunt damage, slash damage, etc. If you use 5 hammers in a single weapon combo, blunt resistant enemies won't take any damage so you need to vary a bit and think about the enemies you are going to face.
It's not the best gameplay out there, but I wouldn't say it's bad either. For the price the game is worth it and can last a while if you want to.
I have the PS4 version though, if you only have a PS3 I heard that version has a console-crashing bug.
