Apollo Justice isn't bad by any means, all the AA games are good, but it's probably the worst game in the main series. It's lows are just as low as 2-3 while never hitting the highs of 2-4.
I'm working through the original three now. Do I have to play apollo justice to understand DD? I don't have a ds and I don't want to emulate.

almost nothing is at stake in the last case. kristoph is fine as a villain but he's already been defeated in the first case. all you do is get him a second murder conviction and wound his pride. finding out what happened to phoenix is interesting at all, but in any other game that would just be a build up to an epic conclusion. instead the actual trial involving the actual main character is completely superfluous and everything that happens is basically beyond his control or understanding (beyond pointing out kristoph has a devil hand)

I thought the worst case in the series was the fucking circus one in AA2. It's not even the characters or the setting, it's just boring and feels like you run around in circles too much. The overall payoff of wrapping the whole thing up also felt very underwhelming.
Too unfocused. Apollo doesn't have a climax and it feels like if he's just there. He's just Phoenix's tool.
