I think Crysis 2 renders tessellated water underneath the entire map, even if the player will never actually see it.
Also a lot of modern gameworks games tend to make use of excessive tessellation, but you can usually just turn that down to something like x8 or x4 and there isn't much of a difference.
But for benchmarks and stuff they'll crank it up to max on both AMD and Nvidia cards and you end up with the full excessive tessellation being rendered on the AMD card which will reduce performance; making Nvidia cards look better in graphs and charts.
