I have a few grand to spare so I thought i'd buy a VR headset

Which is better, the vive or the rift?

I'm not really into gimmicks so I'm not sure I'd get much enjoyment out of full room scale walking about shit

I didn't like the wii
Most importantly, which is better for porn
>>
>>337613143
Oculus rift is better
>>
>>337613143
>I'm not really into gimmicks

One is supported by Valve, the other is supported by Facebook.
>>
>wasting a grand like that
Just fucking wait for better tech and get the most out of your money. VR is still VERY early and its foolish to bother with it currently.
>>
>>337613143
>which is better for porn

Pretty sure you only need cardboard or gearvr for that.
>>
>>337613143
The headsets themselves are probably pretty similar, with the Rift being a bit less of a hassle to wear because of the integrated earphones. But I understand that motion controls actually do add a lot for VR. So right now, the Vive is the better package.
>>
>>337613773
>what is headtracking
>>
>>337613773
Well, there are a couple of Illusion games with VR support. Meaning that you get positional tracking in those. 3dpd videos can't give you that.
>>
>>337613807
I feel like VR is better used for cockpit things atm

virtual cinemas, shit like that

I mean, who the fuck is gonna want to stand up waggling around wiimotes for 8 hours
>>
>>337613959
People interact with things using their hands all the time. It's a very natural thing, and if you don't have tracked controllers you lose it.
One common reaction you see with people who try Rift for the first time is that they try to reach for things and then realize they can't see their hands.
>>
You'd probably get a vive sooner

Oculus is fucking shit and you have to wait like 6 months after you order to get it

I was the same way anon about not caring for the walking around room simulation. I still went with the Vive and let me tell you. The room simulation is where it is at. The walking around and interacting with the world is the most revolutionary thing I have ever experienced. I couldn't imagine being stuck with an occulus. You will not regret purchasing a Vive. I still can't get over how fun/amazing this tech is. It really is not a gimmick.
>>
>>337613820
Oh boy. What you're looking for is "positional tracking," something that is useless with 360 video anyways.

Now to answer OP's question, the Vive is realistically better. If you're just looking for porn and sims, the Rift will offer a better display. That being said, the Oculus store is absolutely terrible, you lose the option to use motion controls if you ended up wanting to (and I assure you, it's a lot better than "waggling Wiimotes for 8 hours"), the tracking is inferior, and god knows if you'll actually get one before the end of the year. Get a Vive instead.
>>
>>337614587
How do you even walk about without hitting a wall?

Do you just pretend to walk in a spot
>>
>>337614954
The software has a "Chaperone System" built in. You define your play space on first set up, tracing your walls, desk, etc., and then a customizable in-game grid will pop up if you're reaching the edge of your boundaries
>>
>>337614954
when you get close to a wall a blue fence appears letting you know not to cross it.
>>
>>337615161
>>337615162
I know but how do you progress in a game if you can only walk a few feet
>>
>>337613143
I have a Vive, it can do both and its cheaper than the Rift.

If you have any questions or want me to post a pic of it with timestamp let me know.
>>
>>337615242
That's kind of a problem. Most games right now that do mix room scale and larger worlds use teleportation.
>>
>>337615332
>it's cheaper than the rift

no it's not
>>
>>337615332
>and its cheaper than the Rift.
How the fuck? Do you have some kind of really weird shipping situation going on?
>>
>>337615242
That's the million dollar question. For now lots of devs are using a blink mechanic, so you can teleport short distances and avoid sim sickness caused by artificial movement, while still having the ability to move 1:1 at all times. Some games still use standard joystick movement options, which is fine if your stomach can handle it, but has a higher chance of causing sickness for lots of people. Finding a non-nauseating, natural movement method is something devs are still trying to figure out.
>>
I would honestly wait at least a year and a half because as of now both are steaming piles of shit.
>>
>>337615375
teleleportation?

Point somewhere, press a trigger, teleport there.
>>337615624
The best device for those is probably GearVR.
>>
>>337615582
the world is divided into a grid. you walk around a box in the grid which is your room you are standing in. you walk to the edge and make the next box over become active and now that becomes your room. so you explore the world one box at a time.
it probably doesn't work so well with lagr open games like skyrim, but works better with small games like legend of grimrock or games with alot of room to room puzzle solving.
>>
>>337615925
They're about the same. Rift may have a very slight degree less screen door, but it has more god ray artifacts. Rift may however be more comfortable. I wouldn't base the decision off of one application, do some research into the full hardware and content package you can expect from both, and decide which meets your needs better.
>>
>>337615624
Where do you guys find videos like this?
>>
>>337616082
How's that supposed to work? Rotate the world by 180 degrees every time you switch cells? That sounds terrible.
>>
>>337615770
Probably doable in the US, but if you're ordering from anywhere else you'll get slammed with shipping costs and import taxes AGAIN since it's a separate product. Not to mention how long it'll take for anyone to get them, if current order fulfillment is any indication.
>>
>>337616276
you just turn around I guess. i'm sure it's different for each game. i've seen some where you point at a block and can teleport over multiple cells.
>>
>>337616209
Nope, you're still in the same position and orientation you would be when you teleported. If you teleport from here [ x] you will still be [ x] in the new room. Most games with teleport don't go off of grids as well, you freely blink to where you want to be.
>>
>>337616483
Yeah, I know, that's the usual method. He's describing something you control only by walking, and I don't see how that would work.
>>
Vive is the better choice because in addition to the same seated experiences as the Rift, it also has the roomscale and motion controller stuff. Actual specs and other factors are so similar between both of them that you might as well go for the one that has more features. Some Rift "exclusives" can even be played on the Vive and I'd expect to see more of them get mods to allow that.

Vive easily. Oculus is way backordered and doesn't compare at all without the Touch controllers. I've bought 5 Rifts and sold them all for profit and kept my Vive.

Also it looks like Vive is getting all the best mods. The biggest worry was Vive wouldn't get the support over Oculus but already it has a larger library and more modding support. Also you can play most Oculus exclusives with the Revive injector. Another thing is SteamVR is way more polished than Oculus Home which is really barebones.
>>
>>337617223
How can you fap while holding 2 motion controllers
>>
>>337616673
Right, you won't be able to walk through your actual walls obviously. So you blink over in a certain direction, and now you have a different environment that fits within your walls that you can freely walk around in. If you walk right up to your wall and teleport, you're still up against your wall. The world won't rotate on you, you'd want to take a step or two back and do it again if you're trying to reach something out of bounds that you're facing. Again, there is no good option for freely and fluidly wandering around. You can teleport between areas of free movement, and you can use a joystick to float your way through the world.

Don't do it man. Don't fall for the meme.

Unless you've used one before and go into it knowing what to expect I guarantee you're disappointed by low resolution and blurry image quality on any detailed images.

The worst are real life videos or pictures with things far off in the distance. Anything further away than you can throw a baseball just disappears into an unrecognizable blob.

You set them down and use it like a remote. It's actually really handy compared to using a controller or M/KB because you can see it in game instead of fumbling around trying to find the shit. I just tried the VR mod for PlayClub and it works pretty well. Needs some work to get better mouse emulation like on the SteamVR dashboard but it's still a WIP.

Fair enough.

I tried out my friend's oculus. It was way better than I was expecting.

But I don't think I'm that interested in playing games on it. I'd mostly just use it for porn.

Maybe it'd be cool in a flight sim

My Vive comes Tuesday and I literally cannot wait. It is utterly incredible how natural it feels with the touch controls.

Also, it's MUCH better if you wear glasses. The Rift is very tight around your face, while the Vive offers a lot more room.

Seems like if you're in the US you'll get a Vive in less than a week. Oculus is still backordered till August and you can't even get the pre-order bonus anymore, though I hear EVE is pretty shit anyway so no huge loss.

I've been wondering about compatibility will Eve just not work on the vive? will it be up to modders to make the vive work?

what about user created mods. like there's an Oculus mod for Sexy Beach PR do the two VR devices use similar enough file structures that a mod created for oculus will work on vive? or am I at the mercy of the community. if nobody ever makes a vive mod then tough shit I bought the wrong device?
this is what worries me about going into VR now with all these competing devices, especially in the realm of porn games where there's not gonna be much official support and you have to rely on whatever moders create.
>>
>>337619337
I ordered one at the end of April and got shipping confirmation today. Apparently, the February and March orders aren't getting priority over people who ordered in April and May, which is kinda fucked up.
>>
>>337621178
Weird. I got mine but I've heard a few people having that issue. I think HTC is trying to switch suppliers from Digital River to someone else because of some of the fuck ups.

>>
>>337619891
Eve won't work on Vive until the devs port it alongside the PSVR release. There is a mod that allows most Rift titles to run on the Vive, but if you're playing an online game that's not going to work.
>>
>>337613143
The vive is better.
That said there's no fucking games for it and no support to play older games in 3d.
I bought it to play Fallout 4, and theres still no support for it.
>>

Tracked keyboard required.

I had an idea of setting your motion controllers on either side of your keyboard to calibrate its position then use its model to have it present in your environment.

You can animate the keys to know which buttons you are pressing. As long as you do not move it would be fine.

Not as good as actually tracking the keyboard, and your hands are not present so that is still an issue

>>337621646
