i cant pinpoint how, but no game has even come close to the atmosphere of TR1 at release.. it really felt like you were going into and exploring a strange, desolate place, which was lethal but also had hidden beauty and treasures to discover. some parts were scary, others puzzling.
maybe it was the great narrative-gameplay linking, because you really had to think out your climbing else you'd slide into spikes or die, and you'd really get worried you might run out of oxygen when swimming through tunnels and you're excited to see the next area, but also afraid to explore further..

Maybe you had to be alive back in the dark ages of gaming to enjoy PS1 games. I've tried with emulators. They look like garbage and play like shit. It's like trying to watch silent movies. Cars instantly stopped dead in their tracks if did so much as touch a wall for a microsecond, bumping into other cars did nothing other than just wobble them like jello without losing control at all, opponents were locked on rails and would push your shit left and right with ease if you crossed their path even once.
There was barely any sense of speed in it either, japs can't make a racing game to save their asses. It just feels like you're going for a casual drive around the city, rather than an actual race. Many other games had better hype than R4, like Wipeout, CTR, Rollcage, San Francisco Rush, and the list goes on.
It wasn't that bad of a game, it had almost everything to be GOAT. It had character, but when you got to actual gameplay, it was just kinda "meh" compared to other games of its time.

It's a classic case of almost everything 3D kinda aged like shit because they were still figuring out the controls and framerate could tank. Keep on mind PS1 gamepad didn't originally have analog sticks so games were built around that.

Don't get me wrong, I love FFT. I've done about a dozen SCCs and/or Double Dares, and I've played v1.3.
But as-released on PS1, the game's got some serious flaws, both in the ridiculously bad translation and just how quickly the job class system utterly breaks the game.
If you're not curbstomping your enemies with ridiculous ease by mid to late Chapter 2 (outside of broken fights like Weigraf/Velius and the Rooftop Elmdor fight), you're doing something incredibly wrong.
It had the framework to be a great game, but didn't capitalize on it.
I still play this to this day.

To use your example, strategic save crystal use in TR was a good design choice.
In St Francis Folly, there's this sort of hub area with a huge collumn in the middle and only a couple of save crystals.
It made the gauntlet rooms and the climbs up and down the pillar much more tense.

OP here, very nice choices! In my opinion, there are so many amazing games to list for the PS1, but I have to say the ones that I enjoy are these (not in any particular order): CTR, Crash Bandicoot 1,2, and 3, Tomb Raider 1, and 2, Spyro 1, 2, and 3, Silent Hill, etc There's just too many to list here, the PS1 is a goldmine when it comes to video game classics!

There's one game (I forget what its called) where you have to make sure the coast is clear before you save or you would be caught off-guard and die when you reload. It's stuff like this that actually adds to the game in creative ways.

I like all of the PS1 TR games. Things were really atmospheric indeed, and the places you visited were always quite interesting. The silence and sudden tracks were also nice. It was always a special moment when a track start playing. Some of the places were really peaceful too, and at the same time you knew the game could suddenly get your heart racing at any moment.

Ehh. First of all, it's not a port, it's a fucking remake (and a rather bare-bones one at that; ha, "bare-bones"). Secondly, you have to put up with an annoying, wisecracking genie (Robin Williams, Al-Zalam sadly is not) squatting in Dan's skull the whole game. Third, if you really want to play MediEvil on the go, just buy it on PSN (or at least, you used to be able to; IIRC, they shut down PSN service for the PSP, so I guess now you could just hack your PSP and emulate it your own damn self).
The music kicked ass, though. The soundtrack's up on iTunes if you want to buy it. And Tom Baker is an absolute joy to listen to as Death/The Ferryman, who also narrates the game (in the opening and closing cutscenes, the game over screen, and introducing each level with a brief joke).

RR2 on PSP is fun, but you can literally drift the wrong way around a corner (eg, if he started drifting while turning left around that bed, he'd slide with the road). It'll fuck up your line completely and you'll probably bump into the wall, but it still mostly works.
it's the sort of game you only play in time attack, and it's an amazing time-attack game, exiting boosts into a drift and then filling your boost bar again is wonderful, actually kind of technical
and the AI in Ridge Racer has never been good, they're literally just moving obstacles in every game that drive at a fixed speed around the track

Namco seemed to have an issue with collisions the entirety of the PS1 era with Ridge Racer.
RR1 and Revolution let you bump into opponent cars to force them away, ignoring the problem, and you completely block enemy cars hitting you like you're a wall.
Rage Racer completely spazzes out if you hit an enemy car (in rare cases, you can get hit from behind, be forced to a dead stop, and have the opponent drive through you) and handles wall collisions about the same as in the first two games.
R4 fixes the worst of the former (you bounce off, neither car is really affected for the most part) and kind of does better about the latter (you still just get your speed lowered and bounce, there's no scraping or anything, but it's not quite as dramatic as it used to be).
of course, the answer is to not get hit
As for speed, the first couple of speed classes are slow as balls in R4, who decided to do that? None of the other games start out quite as slow as R4 does.
if there's one thing that really feels amazing and fast in the series, it's doing the oval track in Rage Racer in the Assoluto, hot fuck
crazy jungle techno blasting in the background while you desperately try not to touch anything else on the track (like the slow cars that you'll probably to lap twice) and the sky has this menacing, cloudy look, it's majestic
