I think at a certain point you have to make concessions for time, because it was already taking a while (like how the Manuel backstory only showed up in this last episode). Penny made a lot of sense to cut out in that regard, although yeah, it's too bad they didn't do the stepladder joke because it's such a staple thing of the series.

Skip to episode five, the first four are painfully poor and it's made an amazing 360° turn around in one episode. Apparently it's because they only had 2 monthes to animate so they pumped out the first four episodes as quickly as possible so they could actually take time and make a good show after that.

Ah, I did already watch it up to the first half of episode 5. It had some neat things...
I actually liked some things about the early episodes, like the scene where he shows Maya the list of all the attorneys he's been asking to take her case.
But it wasn't enough to keep me interested. "I played the games. I know who the killers are. This is like watching an anime I already watched before".

Thw twist is thatTrucy's the mastermind behind all the Japanifornia cases. She's gone full yandere over Phoenix spending more and more time with other people and him going to Khurain to help Maya broke the last straw, so she starts killing people to lure him back. She also attempts to kill off Apollo and Athena so that things can go back to how they were when she was younger before the events of AJ and spent all her time with Phoenix.

The other games had interesting openings, other than the 5-3 opener which you posted none of the other cutscenes in DD were any good. Ema's the one who gets paired up with Apollo that's weird to me, she actually doesn't seem to like the guy at all. The only times in the entire game where she shows some sort of emotion outside of disdain were when she had some science-ing to do and when Apollo shows her Phoenix's fingerprint testing kit

The other games had a whole bunch of boring openings too - just compare DD to AA1 or something: the first two cases are essentially the same thing, the Steel Samurai case has an intro more like the DLC case, and the last case has one similar to 5-4. It's pretty similar.
I get the hate for the overly anime shit (like that awful one of Athena falling off the stairs) but both the openings and endings were generally pretty in line with the "cutscenes" done in sprites in previous games.
