Nothing to note with Heretic, since it's basically a copy/paste of Doom with different graphics and a few new mechanics, like an inventory system. If you've played Doom then you know what to expect from heretic.
Hexen actually changed up the gameplay by adding multiple character classes with their own arsenals and a hub system for level progression, requiring you to backtrack to old levels to solve puzzles in order to progress.

I played through episodes 1 - 3 on nightmare! and found them a very solid and rewarding challenge. Episode 4 is so badly put together than the first fucking map is impossible on nightmare without doing a keycard glitch.
Before the glitch was discovered, the speedrunning community were unable to beat Episode 4, level 1 on nightmare! Pretty insane.
