With titles like Ninja Gaiden, Halo, Breakdown, Metal Wolf Chaos, Penzer Dragon, JSRF, Jade Empire, Gun Valkyrie, Phantom Dust etc. filling out the exclusives and the multiplats being the definitive edition at the time; in addition to having online integrated so well, made this console a top tier beast of a machine.
The problem was that it was higher priced and it came out pretty late, so babbys were already hooked on PS2/Gamecube, but in retrospect there is no reason why the original Xbox can't be considered on par or even better than the ps2, even with its massive library.

They were all god tier, so any choice is good. For me? PS2 was the best console. Just the amount of fucking games, of every genre imaginable. Xbox had far better multiplatform games, PC games, Xbox exclusive games, and was also Dreamcast 2.0. Gamecube had some great exclusive games, and I feel most of its first party games were highly underrated. Dreamcast was also tight as hell, but is somewhat redundant if you have all 3 of the others since they either got ports, or better sequels to most of the must have DC games. GBA was also my favorite handheld.
God tier gen, nothing will ever eclipse it, mainly because the middle market no longer exists, and every game is either a cheap digital only indie game, or AAA graphic house game. The sad thing is when a mediocre, but fun game like Earth Defense Force, or Bound by flame comes out they get completely blasted. Such a shame.

The original Xbox might just be the most underrated video game console of all time. It's either that or the saturn. It had a treasure chest of amazing games that were only available on itself or a very capable PC, which was less common at the time (the amount of RAM required for optimal performance for games like Thief: Deadly Shadows or Morrowind at release made the Xbox version the only option for most people). Of course it also had its own quality exclusives but more importantly was it's multiplat advantage over its competitors. To think we make a big deal about slight resolution differences and frame rate stability now, back then it was night and fucking day. Many multiplats played so incredibly poorly on PS2 that they probably shouldn't have ever been released on the console at all. They at times looked closer to N64 quality than the Xbox quality.
The controller was better, the online (while not free) was much better and years ahead of what Sony was doing with PSN, or what Nintendo was doing, which was nothing.
But for me, one of the biggest advantages is the memory system. Memory cards are cancer. They always will be, and the Xbox HDD was far and away the superior system in gen 6.
On the same note, the PS2 is probably the most overrated console of all time (or the 2600), however, that doesn't discount the sheer volume of games it had. The PS2 had something for everyone, and no other console can boast that fact as much. Period.
The GameCube is the most niche out of the 3 but nowadays it has the most good titles that still can't be played anywhere else. While it's not the Xbox or PS2, it's still Nintendy's most underrated console.

But the Wii and Wii U are similar enough that the distinction is blurred, in part because Nintendo has gone "off-season" in it's console production. Though the Wii U is technically superior to its' predecessor, it came in the latter third of the 7th consoles, and both didn't have the raw power of it's coming competitors (or arguably its previous ones) and was drastically underutilized and gimmicky to a fault.
I hesitate to identify Wii U as 8th gen because it was more akin to the PSX, or a highly capable peripheral than a true successor console.
