I ran servers for HL1 deathmatch and mods until TF2 went F2P which almost broke me and CSGO was released at which point our CSS servers lost a lot of veterans and the influx of foreigners and literal kiddos was too much and I just pulled the plug on everything since all the HL1 mods were dead too.

Some events require "event tickets" which let you actually play in the new maps, that also lets you get the crates featured. Those crates have a chance at having a rare knife, but obviously you won't get it your first time.

every 6 months an operation comes out. you buy the operation pass and you get exclusive competitive maps, crates and drops.
problem is, the new maps are uniformly shit so everyone plays dust2/inferno/mirage/nuke anyway, and the only use for the crates is making a return on the operation pass by selling them on day 1
