as an older doom fan, DOOM 2016 is the best reboot i could have hoped for.
my only complaint is it's kind of easy. i'm playing on ultra-violence the hardest difficulty unlocked from the start.
i am thrilled that a mainstream singleplayer FPS exists that's about nothing but shooting. very little cutscenes taking control away from the player and no annoying NPCs screaming in my ear.
the levels are big and fun to explore. i like the upgrade system although i don't think it's a necessary addition.
guns are fun to use and feel good.

Level design is strong, guns are fun, really my only complaints are that the upgrade system is annoying and distracting and the lack of campaign co-op.

Personally rated the gam 6.5/10 after an hour of play - went up to 7.5/10 after 8 hours. It's just ok, i think that's why so many people fling shit around because of it.
Those who want to like it can find enough good things to like and those who want to hate it do the same.
In the end my rating went up, because certain powerup combos can make the game much more enjoyable, those should have been an option from the beginning tho (mainly speed stuff)

The physical pc version doesn't even install the whole game. It just has a single install disk and then downloads the rest anyways, so what's the point of the physical version? Once you get to E1M3 and beyond, Doom starts having more monsters per map than a whole hour of D44M. Especially on UV and NM. That's one of the most jarring things about D44M, you'd think a gaming striving to "make you feel like a badass" mowing down waves of cannon fodder would be filled with enemies but it's not. You kill 5, climb around like a monkey, go up and down some hallways, maybe find a horde mode room where 20 spawn, and that's a half hour of your time.

Secret walls are very rare. I've only encountered one so far.
That said, the levers that lead to classic doom levels (like the Wolfenstein TNO easter eggs that took you back to Wolfenstein 3D) are hard as fuck to find. There is this shitty runbe system, that really doesn't fit into doom, but by exploiting it you can not only make the gorekills take 1/4th of the animation time (whats good) but you speed up after a gore kill, getting to asian girl in RotT13 game speed (whats also very good) and that makes even the gory kills fun.
The problem is that this unlocks late in the game and should have been there from lvl 1 - because it makes the gameplay feel a lot better.
