it's fast, doesn't hold your hand in any way, enemies are consistent aside from movement, most levels are interesting and challenging, your control of doomguy is never removed, you're locked into a room maybe once in the whole game, environments are vibrant and based around 'landmarks' to make them interesting, genuine secrets you have to work to find, comfy UI, great sound design
also looking up or down doesn't matter, the game is not designed for aiming or looking vertically and as such you don't need it
