TF2 is a fun game but after 9 years it's gotten kind of stale for me. Valve's kind of abandoned support for it in favor of Dota 2. There's maps and shit I remember being in some kind of beta testing that never came out.
Overwatch is a lot more structured than TF2, which I think will turn a lot of people off since one of the big appeals of old FPS games was the community creating their own fun in games with much slower pacing. In Team Fortress 1 it would take a long time before you even saw an enemy player.
Overwatch is really designed as a modern multiplayer FPS, so I doubt the people who prefer TF2 will leave it. TF2's playerbase has stabilized in the past few years so I don't see it dying or anything negative really happening to it that hasn't already happened with all the attention and support going towards Dota 2.

People seem to forget about random crit and random damage spread in tf2 (took valve like 8 years to disable that).

Server community degradation is an odd argument to make when when the game its up against is a rando pug crawling game.
Even if the game had dedicated servers with a 6 player limit I kinda doubt a good community could grow from this, its just going to go the way of WoW pugs where you want to talk to the randoms the least you possibly can, at least that's how I felt in the beta.

My main issue with Overwatch is no private servers although I still bought a copy. But with random matchmaking, a server community of bronies, furries, ruskies, etc can't form. While that's bad in a popular game since this segregates them away, in a less popular game you can be stuck between having to play on a brony server that actually has a population or some half dead server.
I got bored and downloaded CSS recently because I wanted to play zombie escape. The only ZE server that was mostly full was nothing but foreigners and kiddos literally spamming and spraying memes.
Overwatch has been a great experience.

No communities isn't the answer, you take the bad with the good and avoid notorious servers, because if you mix everyone you're just going to get mediocre the whole way down.
Yes, OW is a spiritual successor to TF2 - a game that is massively popular despite being abandoned by it's developer, that also refused to make a follow up to one of the most successful games on the pc platform.
Valve neglected to capitalize on TF2. They've had plenty of time to do it, and now Blizzard is stepping up instead.
