I still have this game, one of the best games ever made.

Pretty good if I remember correctly.
But I haven't played it since I was a kid.
There was two different playable characters that do the levels in a different order, and enemies dropped bubbles or something which you could trade for upgrades on the pause screen.

This game was the shit. But it was hard as balls. I'm pretty sure I only ever beat it once. I remember my brother being really fucking impressed when I finally figured out how to use the deflector to kill the laser in the third level. He'd been stuck on it for a yearhe wasn't very good at vidya
