4 deals more with the temptation of treasure and personal bonds, between Nate and those he loves, and also Sam and his temptation, egging Nate on. The previous games had these as well, but also due to the focus of the plot being the mcguffins and the lost cities, the supernatural stuff and dream states worked.
As much as I would've loved to get on Mr. Bones Wild Ride, I think it benefits the story more to not have supernatural stuff in this one.
The temptation is also echoed with the pirates themselves, since you can read their journal entries and notes they left to each other as they sabotaged one another in their own city.

Look to all of you guys defending this bitch defeating Nathan Drake you can fuck off and here's why. In previous games and this one Nathan has shown to be able to:
1. Scale walls and jump from point to point on walls without any help from climbing equipment with only a few narrow handholds. This demonstrates a large amount of upper body strength.
2. Beats the shit out of ex military units who more than likely had martial arts training as well and are men so they're stronger as well.
3. Nathan is a man and most men can beat the shit out of the opposite gender especially when they have been through as much shit as Nathan has.
My problem with this is that they don't go about this in a smart way.
