This review isn't about whether or not the game is popular or even if it's a good game. The Witcher was outed as being 'problematic' before and shortly after its release, for it's depiction of woman in particular. That's the only reason why Polygon has consistently railed on it in the face or all logic. Because if you actually know anything about the Witcher or even play the games you quickly realize the criticism they are making aren't valid.

It's not like high/late medieval Southern France had any non-Europeans around either, except for the rare Muslim trader/ship at the major port cities. That's very different from finding a random non-European roaming around among the peasantry in the countryside, or an inland town.
