Do vidya writers write "you're the hero" stories to make the player feel special, or is it just because writing a normal guys' story would actually take a bit of creativity to make interesting rather than following a template?

Just use the GOG version, it doesn't need any patch, since it comes pre-built in it. Also don't go Nos or Malk for a first time, one can't be seen and has to stay at the sewers and malks dialog can be better appreciated after finishing the game once.

Every elder scroll or fallout I refuse to do the main quest (I'll beat it once for the lack luster plot) in subsequent play throughs. I'll take any side quests that I stumble upon, and not fast travel unless absolutely necessary or forced. I don't use shouts in skyrim either. Sometimes it's comfy as fuck other times it's not.

Toreador is great for guns, Gangrel is the rip and tear clan and Ventrue is good for both combat and social part. So Ventrue, a maxed out fortitude and presence makes you imune to bullets and physical damage from human enemies.

Aside from being some disgusting test tube baby Solid Snake is a totally regular guy, not some hero. If you didn't find MGS1 to be completely lame then you shouldn't have a problem with this sort of thing. Big Boss is a good example too. The real monster in MGS3 was The Boss, and he was able to kill her and a billion others through trickery and deception.

Only if you side with house/ncr/caeser's legion. Going independent means you have control over every action made in the game. Granted going independent means that you become usurped by the same slave a.i. you used to take over new vegas, but you are atleast the "hero" of the game.

In dark souls 1, you don't start out as important. None of the hollows sent out into the world are. You garner respect because you went out and killed the biggest and most powerful things alive. You are the chosen undead because you chose to go out and continue the cycle. Solaire is the only other undead like you. You meet him from time to time, following the same quest. It is implied that if you renounce the first flame, and attempt to become the new dark lord, solaire will burn himself in your place. He then will become the chosen undead.
