Look at it this way
If you want to be on par with a PC player aim wise, you have to put your sensitivity to an insane level. On PC, you can use any sensitivity and be fine because you aren't restricted to the stick. I play with a relatively low sensitivity on PC and I have a huge ass mouse pad so I can snap to anyone I please. With a controller I'm forced to use an insane sensitivity or I won't be able to react fast enough to shoot anyone.

You can argue movement with a analogue is superior to WASD, but that's kinda subjective.
What isn't subjective is that you can bind all kinds of hotkeys that are only a finger press away, so in the end WASD is a superior set up if you have a lot of things to juggle at the same time.
The Mouse is straight up way more accurate for pointing and shooting, you have to be at the highest sensitivity and have a shit load of practice for a analogue stick to be as effective as a average pc fps player.
However I will say controllers are not nearly as bad as many pc players will claim for playing fps. Keyboard and mouse is far and away superior for fps games, but fps are plenty playable on a gamepad.
If you want to spend a lot of money, then you can buy a scuff controller, which has extra buttons on the back that are rebinds of your face buttons so you never have to let go of the analogue sticks, also some can slow down your sensitivity for more precise aiming. So I guess if you buy a high end model and put a lot of time practicing the analogue sticks, you should be able to keep up with pc players, but its just not worth it unless you play competitively.

equal ground? There are more than one controller brand per system, while many have little to no benefit, there are ones that are superior to stock controllers more often than not. Obviously there's other factors that can subtract to expereinces causing inequality, such as poor networking or lack of close/good servers, as consoles do not have custom/private servers, you are more likely to have a shit connection.
Graphics, while nice, won't change your gameplay. Also, with netcode considerations, 144hz, while nice, rarely gives that much of an advantage, as few games, especially more modern, intensive ones have high enough tickrates to make it beneficial to any substancial level. Not only that but just because you are playing on the same hardware doesn't mean it's the same frames across the board. One player's simple rendered scene might be going at 60fps, but your's isn't guaranteed to be 60fps as well. You dont have to look far to see this occur in many "AAA" games like COD on consoles. This is a potential issue as well on PC but can easily be mitigated with good hardware.
Specs matter, but for online only to a certain point, as past that tickrate you aren't getting much more benefit gameplay wise. Besides, you can always turn down the settings to guarantee a great framerate if your hardware is subpar. Consoles you can't do that with, bad framerates in some games simply can't be avoided with them.

I played Orange Box on 360 for months, and then I got a PC and bought TF2 there on Steam, started playing there. My skills improved immeasurably in a short amount of time, and I realized just how bad I really was with the shitty controller.
You'll always seem like you're okay on controller when everyone else is on controller, but a keyboard/mouse is unparalleled when a game requires any kind of precision. Controllers are great for RPG's and action/platformer games, but bunk for everything else.

I started gaming on the PC, with Quake. Obviously m+kb offers better accuracy, it's just not debatable.
That said, FPS games released nowadays are pretty easy to play with a controller - I beat Wolfenstein TNO that way since I wanted to chill on the couch with my bro, and I'm fairly certain my gameplay experience wasn't hindered by it.

After playing the overwatch beta for 40+ hours on PC and then going back to Halo 5 today for the infection update was really jarring.

Controller is worse than KB&M for shooters, but better for almost everything else.
Racing games, ARPGs, space and flight sims (assuming a HOTAS isn't available), platformers, beat em ups, fighting games, twin stick shooters, and if you're playing local coop on PC (which is rare but does exist) you need one or ideally two controllers even if it's a shooter.
In summary a controller is more useful in 80% of circumstances and if you own a PC but not a controller then you're just as retarded as console kiddies that insist an analog stick is as good as a mouse.

Being able to instantly aim and shoot wherever you want with high precision just seems stupid to me. It makes the game feel less like a game and more like a simulation trying to be realistic. It's so much more satisfying to shoot well on a controller than it is on mouse.
I've used this comparison a lot, but mouse aim for FPS is the same as playing a shoot em' up/bullet hell on a touch-screen or with a mouse. Sure it's fucking precise and fast, but it also takes strategy and fun away from it. I've always thought that competitive multiplayer FPS games would be more interesting with a controller, as there'd be more emphasis on strategy and less on aiming.

For most competitive fps, wasd is better due to implementation of skill based movement (think bunny hopping, airstrafing, rocket jumping and csgo type corner strafing etc)
If more devs included gyroscope fine tuning, it would definitely bridge the gap. I'd say gyro is just as accurate as a mouse when calibrate properly. The problem with joysticks is that they have a limited range of motion compared to the alternatives, it's not a matter of skill or playerbase. Also since the focus of Doom is it's campaign mode rather than the garbage ass competitive multiplayer, it's more or less a moot point.

Nah, they can't. Look up the story of Shadowrun, the FPS that came out before Harebrained kickstarted Shadowrun Returns. It was crossplatform between PC and console and failed because the PC players were absolutely slapping the shit out of the console players with a frightening advantage.
I'm not sure if they eventually added aim assist to the console version, but it was already too late. The game pretty much bombed despite having two or three separate platforms as their integrated potential market.

Reminds me of when "lag switches" were a popular thing. I don't think its really a thing anymore because of better netcode these days and such and will just disconnect you.
On SOCOM 2 I ran across them occasionally. You would see a player running in place at spawn for for awhile then they would suddenly catchup and sonic the hedgehog around the entire map and everyone on the enemy team would die instantly. SOCOM on PS2 was still pretty based though.

I started on PC when I was around 13 or 14 mostly on valve goldSRC and source (DOD,CS 1.6, HL1 mods, and source equivalents) games but I still ended up playing shit like modern warfare 1 on 360 because my PC was shit, valve games luckily could just run on a fucking toaster. After I got into a college and got a decent rig I've never looked back and the thought of an FPS on a controller makes me cringe.

Play FPS games on both console and pc and there honestly isn't much difference for me anymore. There was in the beginning but only adapting my muscle memory to keyboard and mouse, aiming had little to do with it. If you play an FPS anyway, you're sure to get better at it no matter what controller you use. Honestly most FPS games are about skill and knowledge of the game -- design of the map, load outs, range of guns, reload type and speed, ect.
